Department Description:

The Department of Genetics is one of the Basic Sciences Departments within the School of Medicine. The primary mission of this Department is research and teaching. A faculty member heads each of the research labs. The teaching centers on graduate and medical students in the field of genetics and genomics.
The Department of Genetics is comprised of 31 tenure track positions, three fixed term appointments, three EPA non-faculty positions, 62 post docs and graduate students working in labs, and approximately 32 joint appointments. There are 26 permanent full-time SPA positions, 1 permanent part-time and two temporary employees. There are 85 graduate students in the graduate programs.

Position Description:

The Admin Support Specialist will assist current manager with a variety of customer and lab staff requests. This will include overseeing the customer service group of several part-time staff. In order to effectively perform in this aspect of the position, the Specialist will need effectively use a number of databases and be familiar with the HTSF requirements. A science background is necessary to fully understand the work at the HTSF. The field is rapidly changing with the development of new technologies which the HTSF continues to develop, initiate and offer as service. The Specialist will need to have full understanding of services offered in order to discuss needs/ potential issues of sample processing with the customers requesting a service. It will be necessary to reference information within the databases, pull adhoc and preset report(s) and generate reports back to PIs / lab project staff as needed. As the point person for study needs, it will be the responsibility of the Specialist to work with the manager when samples issues or critical study needs will change priorities in the lab, make sure project deadlines are meet as agreed upon, and assist in maintaining communications/ troubleshooting samples with projects. They will also provide continual updates to the HTSF website to keep it current.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a high pressure, diverse environment; Strong organizational skills; Flexible, collaborative, yet able to work effectively with a high degree of independence; Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Preferred Qualifications:

Background in biological sciences or genetics is preferred in order for the candidate to understand this position’s duties. Demonstrated knowledge of such software/programs as Access and web based databases similar to TracSeq, BSPLIMS and Clarity databases which are used to run HTSF but not required.
