The NC State College of Education leads the way in North Carolina in preparing professionals, conducting research, and engaging communities to improve educational outcomes for all learners across the state and beyond. With two-thirds of its faculty grant active and over 120 funded research projects totaling over $90-plus million, the college ranks No. 1 in education research productivity in North Carolina and among the Top 6 percent of colleges of education in the nation. During the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the faculty brought in over $30 million in new funded research. They address society’s most pressing educational challenges and convert their research to action and innovative solutions that transform teaching and learning environments across the lifespan, increasing diversity, equity, and access in education, and building leadership development capacity.

The entire college is engaged in a transformative process to become an anti-racist organization. It is composed of three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 130 faculty members and 90 professional and support staff. The college’s over 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students study across 50-plus degree programs that deliver highly engaged and personalized academic experiences that prepare them to lead in the field of education. This position will be housed in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences which comprises over 30 full-time faculty members, 300 undergraduate students, and 200 graduate students.

The department offers a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Learning Sciences with specializations in: Educational Equity; Educational Psychology; Elementary Education; Learning, Design, and Technology; Literacy and English Language Arts Education; and Social Studies Education. It has Master’s programs aligned with most of the PhD specializations, as well as in Special Education, Curriculum and Developmental Supervision and a Masters of Arts of Teaching. It offers undergraduate programs in Elementary Education (emphasizing mathematics and science) and Middle Grades English Language Arts and Social Studies Education.

The Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences shapes the field of education by engaging in research that addresses current challenges; by participating in cross- disciplinary work that deals with real problems in forward-looking ways; and by preparing professionals who are committed to equity, demonstrate effective pedagogies, and leverage digital technologies to enhance learning. Through our nationally ranked bachelor’s, master’s, Ph.D., and certificate programs, the department exemplifies an innovative merging of teacher education and the learning sciences that results in new pathways for teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service.

We expect the Goodnight Distinguished Professor to be a leader in the College’s commitment to equity. We invite applicants with a unique and promising approach to improving equity in education. We are especially interested in applicants who engage in collaborative work to increase educational opportunity and student success for all by linking research, policy, and practice. We welcome interest from scholars from a wide range of disciplines and theoretical traditions who work across content knowledge domains to creatively ameliorate the effects of inequalities in education; especially in mathematics education, literacy education, or science education. Conceptual and methodological threads within this scholar’s work could include, but are not limited to, QuantCrit, Community Engaged Scholarship, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies, Critical Race Theory, Critical Literacies, Critical Policy Analysis, Interrogation of Power and Identity, Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, Participatory Methodologies, Cultural Methodologies, and BIPOC Populations

The inaugural Goodnight professor will hold an appointment at the rank of professor with tenure in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences and with the opportunity for affiliation through scholarship and research with the College’s William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and/or Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research. Responsibilities include: mentoring and advising doctoral students; teaching undergraduate/graduate courses within the department and college in area(s) of expertise; participating in program or curriculum development; pursuing scholarly research; seeking external funding; participating in the academic, community, and professional activities of the college and university; and engaging in service and outreach/extension with stakeholder groups.
