Requirements

Research Specialist 1, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Lombardi Comprehensive Care Center (LCCC), part of Georgetown University Medical Center, seeks to prevent, treat and cure cancers by linking scientific discovery, expert and compassionate patient care, quality education and partnership with the community — guided by the principle of cura personalis - “care for the whole person.” Georgetown Lombardi is the research engine driving clinical cancer research at MedStar Health in the DC Metro area and northern New Jersey.

The Research Specialist 1 carries out supervised research in complex molecular biology related cancer research, and assists in experiments related to grant funded research projects and with projects as directed. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Specialist I has duties that include but are not limited to:

Research
  • Schedule and perform experiments in research laboratory
  • Teach junior lab trainees various laboratory techniques as appropriate
  • Learn to conduct complex research in routine molecular biology procedures, including gene cloning, transfection, vitro translation, CHIP assays, assays of gene transcription, immunohistochemistry, cell culture, protein isolation and purification, and Southern, Northern and Western blotting


Data Analysis and Interpretation
  • Conduct analysis and interpret experimental data, solve problems in scientific and technical execution and maintain accurate records
  • Prepare relevant findings as manuscripts for submission to journals and assist with grant proposals as requested
  • Participate in the planning and design of experimental investigations
  • Develop, adapt and implement new laboratory procedures


Laboratory
  • Operate complex scientific equipment
  • Present data in laboratory meetings and other venues
  • Order supplies and assist other lab managers in maintaining accounting files for laboratory
  • Search literature for references to technical problems and keep informed by reading technical journal and publications


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree - Master's strongly preferred
  • 0 to 2 years of work-related laboratory experience in research projects in biology, medicine, or other related sciences
  • Basic molecular biology skill
  • Capacity to exercise independent judgment in research design, and to perform non-routine and complex laboratory duties requiring technical skills and proficiency for divisional faculty
