Educational and Experience Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree in related field. Two years of experience in Academic Advising or experience in a related field. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Serves as Assistant Academic Advisor on the Remote Team. Provides essential services to students related to academic policies and procedures specific to Sam Houston State University as they relate to their academic program.

Primary Responsibilities:

Advises enrolled and prospective students regarding academic programs and curriculum requirements for their program of choice. Maintains and updates detailed student files throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary. Provides academic advice and student support to various populations, including students with academic issues. Analyzes and processes degree plans and degree exceptions. Ensures effectiveness of advising processes through proper usage of departmental course offerings and thorough documentation within the University’s secure advising system. Provides guidance to students with decision making/responsibilities related to their academic and vocational goals. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Temporary, full-time, benefits eligible grant funded position expected to end on or before 12/31/2021. Continuation of the position is contingent upon continued funding.

Regular contact with students, parents, faculty, and staff. This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Position will maintain a regular, fixed schedule based on the institution’s needs and as approved by departmental leadership. All appointments and correspondence, across the institution and with students, will be in a digital/internet-based format (e.g., Zoom, official SHSU email, instant messenger, phone) as this position will not hold in-person advising sessions. Will be responsible for providing all work-related materials for job functions as a stipend will not be granted to purchase items needed to complete job functions. A computer with one monitor or a laptop will be provided. Advisor responsible for providing all work-related materials including, but not limited to:

Stable, secure internet connection
Web camera, with microphone capabilities
Additional monitor (optional – 2 monitors are recommended)
Printer (optional)
Scanner (optional)
Headset (optional)
Office supplies (e.g., pens, paper, paperclips, highlighters)

Advisor is responsible for ensuring workstation remains undisturbed and is FERPA compliant in order to maintain a positive relationship with their students. Employees are not permitted to work in public, unsecured workspaces (e.g., coffee shops, public airspaces). The primary communication with the university, advising office, students, college partners, etc. will be through email, phone calls, Zoom, and online submissions of digital forms.
