JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Office of Student Services, the Academic Advisor will perform administrative support functions and advise students about undergraduate programs and degree requirements across all schools and colleges at the University of Connecticut and work closely with other departments to encourage support and retention.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advise students in selecting and registering for University and School/College academic requirements and applying to or changing major/minor according to posted application deadlines
- Work as part of a team and maintain an individual advising load of predominantly first and second-year students
- Teach First Year Experience classes
- Participate in planning and implementation of campus events (i.e. New Student Orientation, Open House, resources fairs, recognition events etc.)
- Maintain accurate electronic notes and assists in compiling reports
- Serve as a resource for students, faculty, and staff and make appropriate referrals
- Attend and/or conduct events/meetings on behalf of the campus, office or department
- Support academically at-risk students and make recommendations regarding dismissal
- Assist in writing and/or editing informational and publicity materials
- Serve on campus or university committees, as required
- Mentor students as part of the UConn Connects program
- Perform related duties as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, or related field and three years of post-baccalaureate experience in academic counseling or advising OR Master’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Higher Education/Student Affairs, or related field and one year of post-baccalaureate experience in academic counseling or advising
- Demonstrated ability to relate well to students, faculty, staff and public
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of antiracism, equity, and inclusion practices
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Higher Education/Student Affairs, or related field
- Three or more years post-Graduate experience counseling/advising undergraduate students in higher education
- Experience/interest in working with diverse communities in an urban campus setting
- Experience counseling or advising academically at-risk students in a higher education setting
- Knowledge of undergraduate programs and degree requirements at the UConn
- Experience working in Peoplesoft or similar system(s) in higher education
