Science Liaison and Reference Librarian - Georgetown University

The Georgetown University Library is an agile organization that respects the heritage of the past while anticipating the requirements of the 21st century. By providing preeminent services, collections and spaces, the Library shapes the creation of knowledge, conserves culture for posterity, and transforms learning and research.

The Science Liaison and Reference Librarian supports the teaching and research activities of the University by providing research, reference, and instructional services; developing and managing - in all relevant formats - the Library's collection in Science disciplines, as assigned; and by coordinating the content and organization of appropriate web pages. Reporting to the Head of Research Services, along with seven other subject liaisons and reference librarians, the Science Liaison and Reference Librarian has duties that include but are not limited to:

Reference and Research

  • Answer research questions of students, faculty, and other library users in the Blommer Science Library, by phone, e-mail, virtual reference software, or by appointment; determine patron's research need, identify and locate appropriate information sources; instruct patrons in the use of online and print sources to identify relevant research material; and recommend alternative approaches and direct patrons to sources outside the library as necessary.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for all questions related to assigned science disciplines.
  • Keep up with trends and developments in these areas regardless of format and provenance.
  • Work scheduled hours at the reference desk including evenings, weekends and holidays in rotation with other staff, as needed.
  • Continually acquire knowledge of new reference resources and update skills through self-education, continuing education opportunities and professional development activities.
  • Provide research consultations to students and faculty from assigned departments.

Collection Development
  • Develop collections in line with the pedagogical needs and key initiatives of the University.
  • Work with faculty to learn about their research and curricular needs and keep faculty informed of relevant publications and resources.
  • Select materials in all formats - for example, electronic journals, databases, datasets, print monographic materials, print serials; audiovisual materials, microformats, and integrating resources.
  • Regularly review approval plan and slip profiles and performance, recommend modifications, and monitor the funds for designated subject areas.
  • Manage reference and circulating collections in assigned areas.
  • Engage in additional collection management activities such as deselection, projects related to storage, decisions on electronic resources, evaluation and recommendations for purchase of resources in all formats).
  • Work with preservation staff on decisions related to digital and print preservation.
  • Contribute to Library Impact Statements, which assess the effect of new University programs on the need for Library resources.
  • Articulate and continually evaluate collecting policy for assigned areas.
  • Evaluate and effectively use statistical information, including usage data, to make well-informed collection development decisions, and to conduct regular assessment of assigned areas of subject responsibility.
  • Assess and make determinations on the disposition of gift materials.
  • Participate in retrospective collection development, as appropriate for selection areas or as opportunities arise.

  • Support the integration of information literacy skills into course and program curricula by teaching course-specific and other types of reference & instruction sessions in a variety of formats.
  • Design, implement, and coordinate a range of learning objects such as web-based tutorials, instructional videos, research guides and websites to promote student learning
  • Collaborate with faculty to plan sessions and create teaching materials that connect with course assignments and align with curricular objectives.
  • Team-teach sessions with faculty and librarians.
  • Conduct in-house training and workshops and participate in those given by others.

  • Actively engage with faculty, students, and staff in assigned areas, developing strong relationships and promoting the Library's relevant services and collections.
  • Work closely with faculty members and students to learn the structure, size, and scope of academic programs as well as associated values, interests, research tools, and methodologies to inform collection development decisions and reference and instruction services.
  • Be attuned to changing workflows and patterns of scholarly communication in the science disciplines.

Professional Development and Library-wide Initiatives
  • Serve on library and university-wide committees and task forces and participate in library-wide initiatives as required.
  • Participate in meetings and in planning. Suggest revisions in policies and enhancements to services.
  • Participate in consortial, regional and national associations.
  • Contribute to the profession through publications, presentations, and/or active involvement in professional associations at the regional and national level.
  • Continually acquire new knowledge and update skills to enhance professional performance in all areas of responsibility.
  • Keep abreast of developments, trends and issues in the library field.

  • Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with students, faculty, and staff in a public service capacity (outreach and instruction)
  • Experience with collection development in an academic or research library
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and work collaboratively with a range of individuals
  • Expertise in/familiarity with current instructional and multimedia technologies
  • Expertise in/familiarity with web-authoring applications
  • Demonstrated interest in the application of information technologies in the sciences
  • Strong service commitment to working with students, faculty, staff, and other communities
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Either a Bachelor's degree in a science field or extensive experience with science collections and research methods
  • Ability to read print of various sizes, move book trucks weighing up to 40 lbs., retrieve books, and operate computers and peripherals.

Preferred qualifications
  • Second graduate degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent years of work and/or other equivalent expertise
  • Demonstrated experience in or knowledge of science research methodologies
  • Record of participation or interest in professional development activities, such as presentations or participation in professional organizations
