Dining and Conference Services at St. Lawrence University invites applications for a Catering Manager position.

Management position responsible for successfully developing and executing catering events to meet customer needs. This position supervises the sales and event order communications, hiring, scheduling, and training of service staff, planning, delivery, set up, clean up, and proper invoicing for all events. These events include, but are not limited to, commencement, trustee events, reunion, weddings, Presidential events, student groups and local community events.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Ensure catering operations connect to the mission of Dining Services and the University. Deliver consistent quality in planning and execution of events. Manage catering team to ensure quality in final presentation of food. Hire, train and manage employees to ensure knowledge of food menus. Reward and recognize employees. Monitor team performance and provide regular feedback. Plan and execute team meetings and daily huddles. Complete and maintain all staff records including training records, schedules, and performance data. Hold regular meetings with Principal Clerk to review catering calendar.
  • Customer Relations: Develop and maintain effective client and customer rapport for mutually beneficial business relationships. Demonstrate excellent customer service. Cultivate key relationships with departments that frequently use catering.
  • Financial Performance: Responsible for delivering food and labor targets. Develop and execute strategies to achieve catering revenue forecasts through both internal and external sales.
  • Productivity: Responsible for executing catering events of varied size and scope, including staffing and management. Ensure accurate reporting of all catering related revenue, expenses, and receivables. Coordinates with Principal Clerk to ensure events are booked & billed correctly and to manage the catering calendar. Coordinates with Chef Manager on production and costing of menus. Coordinate activities with other departments as appropriate.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with St Lawrence & NYS food, occupational and environmental safety policies in all culinary and kitchen operations. Comply with all applicable policies, rules and regulations, including but not limited to those relating to safety, health, wage and hour.

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires at least 4 years of catering experience and 1 to 3 years in a management role
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, accomplish tasks without direct instruction and problem solve for the best solutions
  • Ability to interact with diverse and high-volume customer base in a friendly and efficient manner
  • Flexible schedule including nights and weekends per the demands of events
  • Understanding of food trends and basic knowledge of food allergies and dietary restrictions
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, etc.) experience
  • Excellent ability to multi-task, stay organized and strong attention to detail
  • Valid Driver’s License
