Job Summary

MAP Peer Mentors serve as knowledgeable guides and advocates for students. Their role is to advise and support undergraduate students, primarily freshmen, during their time of transition and adjustment to college. Peer mentors serve as a guide and role model to college students who might otherwise drop out of school due to feelings of confusion, isolation, and discouragement.

Peer mentors work to provide a welcoming environment that is conducive to students’ needs and supports student success. As a peer mentor, you are providing an example to students by your actions in and outside the classroom. When you are in the office, it is your first priority to help create an inclusive and supportive environment. In addition, you are expected to perform your job duties to the best of your abilities and to ask for help when needed.

Peer mentors also serve as an information resource by directing students to available resources and support services on- and off-campus. Students are not expected and should not attempt to address issues beyond their level of expertise.

*Communicate with protégés via in person,email, phone, social media.
*Provide academic coaching/assistance meetings for proteges
*Attend First Year Seminar Course with program participants
*Organize social engagement activities with protégés
*Complete required training
*Documentation of duties and mentoring
*some evening hours required

Required Qualifications

Must be a current University of West Georgia student enrolled for six credit hours and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative grade-point average unless otherwise noted/indicated by the hiring department.

Superior customer service skills, positive and friendly attitude. Willingness to work cooperatively with others. Ability to handle confidential information with care and ability to prioritize duties. Basic computer skills and knowledge, attentiveness to details, and good organizational skills and initiatives. Assist students with scheduling appointments and provide information on other academic support programs offered for student success.
Be able to lift and carry mail. Take stairs and non-stop work for two-plus hours.

Preferred Qualifications

*A past member of the MAP Program
*Mentoring experience
*Understanding of Diversity and cultural sensitivity
*Must attend mentor training
*Organize social engagement activities with protégés
*The ability to document mentor/ protege meeting

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge of Microsoft office and social media platforms.

Conditions of Employment

Able to lift up to 10 lbs.

Other Information

Student will demonstrate the ability to evaluate, integrate, and apply appropriate information from various sources to support each mentee. Students will demonstrate their ability to work with diverse populations.
