Job Summary

The campus Grounds Landscape Manager will lead and manage the grounds crew, landscape contractors, plan and organize improvements to campus landscape. Perform budget preparations, reviews and approves all spending. The campus Grounds Landscape Manager is a professional in the field of landscaping, ornamental horticulture, irrigation and grounds maintenance. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the activities related to management and maintenance of horticultural assets. The position performs a variety of complex support duties in the design and completion of campus grounds and landscaping projects, campus construction projects and other projects as required to enhance the overall appearance of the campus.

Performs supervision of the landscape maintenance in order to maintain the beauty and aesthetics of a clean and well-kept campus with the assistance of contractors, student and non-student employees that are under the incumbent’s direct and indirect supervision.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

(70%) Supervision of grounds and landscape maintenance and improvements

(a) The incumbent provides leadership over landscaping of the BYUH campus; (b) supervises the planting, cultivating, pruning, fertilizing and develops the growth of grass, flowers, shrubs and trees; (c) provides leadership and direction over contractors; (d) Included in duties is training employees on how to prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth and removes damaged leaves, branches, or twigs; (e) manages cutting and watering lawns including water savings technics; (f) responsible for the selection of plants, trees and shrubs, ensures upkeep and improvement of landscapes and hardscape of BYUH; (g) plans future projects, provide estimates, methods of completion and works with architects when drawings are needed; (h) Prepares, tracks and reconciles budgets for the grounds area (i) approves the purchase of all plants and materials used in this shop.

(20%) Equipment Maintenance/Safety

(a)Ensures that all employees have and utilize proper PPE (b) must demonstrate an emphasis on safety while employees are using potentially hazardous tools; (c) leads the shop as they make minor repairs and performs maintenance on equipment such as lawn mower, spreader, weed whacker, shrub trimmer and other small equipment used in daily operations;

(10%) Supervision, Debris Removal and Other

(a)Supervises employees who focuses on students and part-time employees on the proper care, safety and use of gardening tools; (b) cultivates a good working environment with his team and other Facilities Management staff; (c) maintains an esthetically pleasing campus; (b) is responsible for those who clean out drainage ditches and culverts; (c) Provides budget and project input for CNA planning; (d) provides service to the campus community by demonstrating a pleasing demeanor as a campus employee; (e) may assist others in the grounds department to develop skills as needed and performs other tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and Work Experience: Certificate/license in Horticulture; High school diploma or GED also required. BS in Horticulture or related field desired. Extensive knowledge of plants, methods of propagation, care and health of plants, shrubs and trees. A background in Hawaiian plants is preferred. Supervision or management of landscape maintenance and installation contractors and crews desired.

Skill Set:

Proven budgetary preparations and management of project costs and budgets

Provides professional advice on the selection, ordering, planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, ground covers, and turf grasses

Plans and designs annual and perennial flower beds

Trains and supervises subordinate personnel in the proper methods and techniques of planting ornamental plants.

Trains ground personnel in the techniques of pruning, wound dressing, cavity repair, and the cabling and bracing of trees and shrubs.

Prepares orders for various types of plants and trees

Inventories, maps and labels trees and shrubs on campus for instructional and maintenance purposes

Assists in the preparation of maintenance programs for the control of plant diseases and insects

Prepares fertilizer programs for various types of plants

Ability to recognize common species of plants and trees grown in Hawaii

Ability to lead a department and manage contracts, contractors and employees

Ability to ensure all State and County codes are followed

Have a background in pest control including rats, destructive insects, ants and cockroaches

Know how to interpret soils reports and have the ability to improve soil conditions

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others

License or Certification: Possesses a Certificate/License in Horticulture.

Valid Hawaii Class C driver’s license required.

Equipment Used

Operate various power landscaping equipment and may use heavy equipment.

Computers, printers, copy machines, and occasionally mowers, blowers, trimmers, hedgers, gardening tools, chain saws, carts, pickup trucks, and hand tools.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus, operates electric carts, trucks, cars and other tools. Strenuous physical exertion for short periods of time as duties require. Continual moderate physical exertion may be required during some aspects of job performance.

Purchasing of equipment, large tools and large material purchases.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Exempt. Normal department work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:00am – 2:30pm, with a half hour lunch; will be called upon to work during emergencies, special events and as requested.

TRAINING/EVALUATION:

The employee is required to attend all training that is mandated/approved by the supervisor. In addition, the employee is expected to meet with the supervisor for the annual performance evaluation. Weekly or Bi-weekly meetings with the Director.
