Baht Lab Postdoctoral Associate

The Baht Laboratory is in search of a highly motivated person for a postdoctoral position. The Baht Laboratory (www.thebahtlab.com) is a member of theDepartment of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University and is housed in the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute. The work in our lab concentrates on understanding aged-associated shortcomings in bone fracture healing using mouse models. Current projects concentrate on identifying the role that circulating factors and inflammation play in bone aging and regeneration.

A qualified candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biology,Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering or another related field with a strong understanding of bone biology. The following experiences/skills will be an asset:

- strong analytical skills with high ability to analyze data from projects, summarize results, draw conclusions, and develop strategies to support and expand results

- experience analyzing “omics” based platforms will be an asset, especially transcriptomics and proteomics

- excellent organizational skills

- strong communication skills

- experience in working on a research team

- histological tissue preparation, sectioning, and staining

- µCT analysis, mechanical testing

- protein analysis by western blotti ng/elisa/proteomics

- transcript analysis by rt-pcr/RNA seq

- mouse husbandry

- mouse surgery

- tissue culture

- flow cytometry

The proposed start date is mid to late 2021. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The initial appointment will be for 2 years, renewable depending on funding, available work and performance. Salary is corresponding to NIHguidelines.

Post Doctoral Associate Stipulations

DEFINITION:The Postdoctoral Appointee holds a PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g.ScD, MD, DVM). Candidates with non-US degr ees may be required to provide proof of degree equivalency.

1. A candidate may also be appointed to a postdoctoral position if the candidate has completed all of the requirements for a degree but the degree has not been formally conferred: in this case, the candidate may present evidence of completion of the degree requirements, together with a statement documenting the date on which the degree is to be conferred. If the degree is not conferred by this projected date, the postdoct oral appointment may be terminated.

2. Note for international candidates: Generally, immigration classifications (e.g., H-1B, J-1, etc.) require that the requisite degree be conferred before a petition can be filed or a visa document issued to sponsor the individual.The term of the appointment is limited (see Section 5 of the Postdoc Policy for length of appointment). The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, and may include teaching responsibilities.The appointment is generally preparatory for a full time academic or research career. The appointment is not part of a clinical training program, unless research training under the supervision of a senior mentor is the primary purpose of the appointment. The Postdoctoral Appointee functions under the supervision of a mentor or a department at Duke University. The Postdoctoral Appointee is expected to publish the results of his other research or scholarship during the period of the appointment.

*Open and timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets of the Postdoctoral Appointee's research activities.

*Postdoctoral Appointees are encouraged to consult the AAMC Compact Between Postd octoral Appointees and their Mentors for suggested guidelines for the Postdoctoral Appointee-mentor relationship

*Prompt disclosure to the mentor regarding the possession and desire to distribute materials, reagents, software, copyrightable and potentially patentable discoveries derived from the Postdoctoral Appointee's research.

*Collegial conduct towards members of the research group and others as described in the Duke University School of Medicine Honor Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant conduct policies pertaining to other schools at Duke University.

*Compliance with all applicable University and departmental policies and procedures.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B.
