General Summary of Position:

The Director of University Library should be a visionary leader who draws on best practices and data to optimize the Library’s resources and assets in meeting this mission. The Director of University Library will articulate the strategic vision for the library and serve as an advocate for the Library within the University and the larger community. The Director of the University Library will supervise a team of faculty librarians and library staff in their responsibility to provide instruction, reference and library services to the community. The Director of the University Library will provide oversight and support to all areas of the library (staffing, acquisitions, budget supervision, periodicals, cataloging, webpage, databases, archives, systems, instruction, digital initiatives and library technologies, reference, outreach, and collection development).

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • MLS degree as ASA accredited institution
  • At least five years of administrative experience at the university level including strategic planning, fiscal management, personnel management, and experience with relevant technologies
  • Knowledge of current issues, developments, innovations, and challenges in academic libraries and archives, information technology, scholarly communications, and higher education
  • Record of creative leadership and strong interpersonal, communication, supervisory, and budget management skills
  • Successful experience with grant writing, development, and fundraising activities
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing a diverse and equitable library culture and evidence of work with a diverse community
  • Successful experience cultivating relationships and partnerships within and outside of the Libraries and university
  • Proven expertise with creating, teaching, and evaluating library instruction classes
  • Proven ability in providing reference and research services
  • Experience in and knowledge of several areas of academic librarianship
  • Understanding of and comfort with library technologies and the ability to implement and assess those technologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a collective bargaining environment
  • Second masters’ degree or PhD
  • Experience with a multi-campus environment
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external constituencies, including donors and potential donors
  • Record of engagement in professional associations and/or achievement in scholarly productivity
