Educational and Experience Requirement:

Associates Degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Public Relations, English, or a related field required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Three years of experience in communications, public relations, the media, or experience in a related field. Demonstrated writing ability is the key necessary skill. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Prepares news and feature stories about the University and its on-campus and community stakeholders for use in traditional and electronic media and release to the news media.

Primary Responsibilities:

Organizes, collaborates, investigates, and synthesizes content into readable and compelling copy. Interviews members of various Sam Houston State University publics to include community, staff, faculty, students and alumni. Prepares copy for magazines, newsletters, brochures, and web sites. Researches and gathers factual information and synthesizes content into readable and compelling copy. Researches Sam Houston State University publics for potential communication products. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Must display creativity, initiative, and possess the ability to work on multiple pieces. Must have basic understanding of traditional and electronic publishing concepts and competent in the use of computers and cameras. Must be self-motivated, detail oriented, organized, and have the ability to self-check copy being prepared. Writer must have the ability to interact with a range of individuals both on and off campus and may at times be the sole representation of the office and the University.
