Nature of Work

The Cancer Center is hiring a full-time Accountant to provide day-to-day detailed financial, accounting and reporting support to assigned faculty and programs within the Cancer Center.

This full-time, University Staff (non-classified position) will be responsible for reconciling gift and institutional funds using university systems including PeopleSoft financial accounting software, CU-Data and A2E, Axiom, CU Marketplace, Concur, Microsoft Excel, etc.  Accountant will need to facilitate budget uploads to all funds, provide budget forecasts and spending trend analyses, and aid with fund setup and closeout, including ensuring all accounts are in a positive financial position by processing journal entries and requesting payroll expense transfers as needed. This position will also be responsible for working closely with fund managers on any questions regarding appropriate fund usage, expenditure detail, purchasing, etc. This position may need to assist with procurement functions such as preparing purchase orders and reimbursement requests. In addition, the accountant will be responsible for maintaining a Cancer Center gifts database, managing gift agreements and correspondence with the Office of Advancement, and reconciling institutional fund budgets on a monthly basis.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Develops user-friendly reports for fiscal review of assigned gift and institutional programs to each investigator, manager or administrator on a monthly basis.
  • Ensures that all programs maintain a positive financial position.
  • Prepares journal entries and reviews salary allocation on a regular basis to ensure accuracy. 
  • Works closely with the accounting & finance team and fund managers/principal investigators to resolve all funding discrepancies immediately.
  • Provides input to the Office of Advancement regarding proper fund setup and maintains electronic records of gift agreements and related communications.
  • Updates Excel dashboard of all gift funds with balances, fund purposes, and usage categories using input from CU-Data, A2E, Office of Advancement, and Cancer Center finance team.
  • Analyzes spending patterns and encumbrances to interpret financial health of funds.  Provides guidance on spending trends and compliance to fund managers/principal investigators.
  • Processes payments for travel reimbursements, payment vouchers and invoices using the most current and efficient procurement procedures.
  • Prepares monthly reconciliation of institutional funds using Excel workbook and CU-Data reports.
  • Uploads gift budgets annually using Axiom and coordinates institutional fund budget uploads and adjustments with the SOM Dean’s Office.
  • Additional duties as needed.


Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Thorough understanding of basic accounting principles.
  • Strong attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple competing deadlines.
  • Exceptional customer service in all situations
  • Strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.  Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Minimum Requirements for Entry Level

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
Minimum Qualifications for Intermediate Level:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • One (1) year of professional level finance, accounting, or budget experience.
Substitution (all levels): Four (4) years of finance and/or accounting experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience working with University of Colorado systems, including PeopleSoft Finance, HCM, Concur and CU Marketplace.
  • Candidates with 1 year of experience working in a higher education or health care field preferred.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $40,731 – $45,000 commensurate with skills and experience.  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
