Position Summary:

The director of Residence Life and Housing reports to the vice president for Student Affairs, and provides strategic leadership and management to the SUNY Cortland Residential Life and Housing Office, which provides on campus housing for approximately 3200 students. The Office supports an inclusive, safe, and respectful campus culture designed to foster personal growth, responsibility, and transformative learning. The director is a critical member of the Student Affairs Cabinet and is responsible for the development and implementation of departmental mission, goals, and assessment in alignment with those of the Division and the University. The director will anticipate, develop, and implement best practices that are responsive to trends regarding student issues, programming, and administrative operations.
The director will monitor and provide direction as needed for the management of housing assignments, staff selection, training and evaluation. The director will work with senior leadership across the campus including campus partners in Facilities and Operations Services, University Police, Cortland Auxiliary Services, Multicultural Life and Diversity, International Programs and Admissions. Management areas will include fiscal management of departmental budget, assessment, program development, student learning outcomes, housing contracts, facility management and operations, housing assignments, marketing, employee development, and office management. The director will provide senior level leadership to housing facilities renovation and new construction projects.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate the residence life program.
  • Develop short and long-range plans for the Residence Life and Housing program including student development, student retention, student success, and promotion of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Manage a departmental budget of $2.5 million including providing support to programs and initiatives that promote student success and activities.
  • Long-range planning for capital projects especially as they relate to new hall construction and renovations of existing halls.
  • Serve as liaison to offices inside and outside of the Division of Student Affairs such as Campus Activities and Corey Union, Student Conduct, Counseling, Student Health Services, University Police, Educational Opportunity Program, Career Services, Multicultural Life, Recreational Sports, Cortland Auxiliary Services, Facilities Management Services, College and Student Accounting Services, Budget Office, Purchasing and Accounts Payable, Computing Services, and various academic departments and committees as they relate to mutual concerns of these areas and the Residence Life and Housing Office.
  • Act on behalf of the vice president for Student Affairs as “officer in charge” when called on.
  • Serve as liaison with SUNY Residence Life and Housing Administrators (SUNYRLHA) and SUNY System administrators on issues related to SUNY Cortland’s Residence Life and Housing program. This includes relationships with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) and the Office of General Services (OGS) for construction and purchasing.
  • Policy development to meet changing needs and demands of student population.
  • Direct supervision of four professional and one clerical staff, overall supervisory responsibility for three additional support staff, one additional central staff, 16 residence hall directors, and 142 student staff.
    *Coordinate and collaborate with Facilities Planning for rehab/renovation projects currently in progress, as well as future projects in the residence halls.
  • Monitor and provide direction as needed the planning and coordination with Facilities Operations for the overall maintenance and improvements in the residence halls.
  • Responsible for the effective management of assigned staff that includes, but is not limited to, leading, managing, supervising, and supporting the development of employees in a manner that is appropriate to each individual and consistent with respective Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) and University policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources Office to address and resolve issues or concerns regarding employee performance, misconduct, or other personnel-related concerns.
  • Represent the department in major University events such as new student and family orientation, family weekends, admissions activities, and in other institutional initiatives
  • Build a positive team culture that emphasizes communication and transparency, opportunities for growth, culture of collaboration, and a strong purpose and core values
  • Be a calming and compassionate presence, decisive thinker, creative problem-solver and action-oriented leader in times of distress and crisis
  • Communicate with and respond to parents and family members.
  • Serve on various University committees as needed.
  • Ensure ongoing, comprehensive, and research-based departmental planning and assessment to include the establishment and review of departmental goals and outcomes consistent with the mission, vision, values and priorities of the University; regular assessment of the accomplishment of goals and outcomes, timely completion of annual planning and assessment reports, and the integration of assessment results with budget requests.

Job Requirements:

Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

  • Reports to the vice president for Student Affairs.
  • Direct supervision to three associate directors and an administrative assistant.
  • Indirect supervision to two assistant directors, three administrative assistants, 16 residence hall directors, and approximately 115 residence assistants.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Seven years of experience with progressive responsibility within a comprehensive residence life program in a higher education setting including mid-level management and supervision of student staff.
  • Experience recruiting, hiring, training, development, supervision and retention of professional staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an equitable, diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • Experience with development and assessment of co-curricular programming.
  • Experience developing policies and procedures.
  • Experience managing housing numbers, contracts and projections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology applications, including housing software and reporting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of budget management for residence life and housing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, etc.).
  • More than ten years of residential life and housing management experience.
  • Experience partnering with multiple college offices to benefit student success.
  • Budget management experience for comprehensive residence life program in a higher education setting or similarly complex organization.
  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency with technology applications, including housing software and reporting.
