Primary Position Function/Summary:

This staff member works under general supervision of the County Extension Director and the 4-H/Youth Development Educator. This position will implement 4-H/Youth Development programs within Unit 18, and other programs as assigned. The primary location for this position is at the Christian County offices? however, it may be necessary for this position to work from the other offices in Unit 18 on an as-needed basis.

Assist in publicizing opportunities for participation in Extension youth development programs and for related groups. Refer interested persons to appropriate group leaders or placement of volunteers. This includes helping with design and distributing of monthly 4-H newsletter

Facilitate organization of new Extension youth development groups

Promote and implement participation of local participants in Extension youth development programs conducted beyond the unit level including camps, conferences, workshops and contests by performing such activities as:

  • Publicizing and recruitment participations,
  • Recruiting volunteer coordinators Providing information on the opportunities
  • Assisting with logistics, registration, and transportation arrangements
    • Make contacts with other local groups and organizations interested in youth development issues and Extension programs and resources including schools, park districts, family and youth-serving agencies, organizations, and collaborations
    • Work with Unit 4-H Youth Development Educator, clerical, volunteers, and the County Extension Director to collect, process, and maintain Extension youth group membership records, publication orders, and mailing lists. Manage recognition, competition, entries, and event registrations as assigned

    Support group leaders by:

  • Providing training for leaders
  • Communication program updates and related information through news media and Internet via website and other social medias
  • Maintaining contact with leaders and passing on concerns and progress reports to the 4-H Youth Development Educator and other appropriate Extension Educators and County Extension Director
  • Assisting 4-H Youth Development Educators, other Extension Educators and volunteers with arrangements conducting leader education programs
  • Coordinate volunteer management activities to support youth development program needs and events by assisting volunteers in such activities as:

  • Identifying needed volunteer roles and development job descriptions
  • Publicizing volunteer opportunities
  • Recruiting, interviewing, screening and placing volunteers in a manner consistent with volunteer appointment guidelines
  • Conducting orientation and identifying and relaying training needs to the 4-H Youth Development Educator, other Extension Educators, and volunteers
  • Giving input for volunteer evaluation
    • Work with volunteers responsible for conducting Extension activities such as county fairs and 4-H shows, membership events, workshops, recognition programs, health fairs, camping programs, etc. May include some evening and weekend work
    • Support the local mission of University of Illinois Extension and have a thorough understanding of the 4-H program and University of Illinois Extension

    • Perform duties in a professional manner when dealing with staff and public

    Minimum Qualifications:
    1. High school graduation or GED

    2. Any one or any combination that equals four (4) years/ 48 months of responsible volunteer or professional work experience in coordinating educational and/or community programs or activities

    B.College coursework in any field of study

  • 60 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals three (3) years (36 months)
  • 120 semester hours or more equals four (4) years (48 months)

    This Extension Program Coordinator position is a 100%-time, benefits-eligible Civil Service position. The work schedule is to be determined (37.5 hours per week, 12 months per year). The minimum salary is $19.48 per hour.
