About the Department:

The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences (FBNS) is a team of scientists, researchers, and teachers committed to guiding the undergraduate and graduate education of students preparing for professional and technical careers in Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences. As a department, FBNS identifies, develops, and applies the appropriate concepts, theories, and emerging methodologies from the fundamental disciplines of chemistry, engineering, microbiology, food and bioprocessing. nutrition, and sensory science, to the investigation of critical issues in food & biological systems, components, products, and processes.

Essential Job Duties:

  • The Department of Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences seeks to hire a 12-month Lecturer position.
  • This position will be expected to update and instruct once per year, three 3 credit courses related to fermentation science and technology. These courses include; BBS 325 (Introduction to Brewing Science and Technology) course during the Spring semester, BBS 326 (Brewing Practices and Analyses) course and lab during the Fall semester, and BBS 427 (Brewing Equipment, Controls and Operations) course during the Spring Semester. The Lecturer will provide insight, as well as instruction and guidance to the students through in-class lectures, quizzes, question and answer forums, as well as a final exam.
  • The Lecturer will supervise the work of teaching assistants, deliver pre-lab instructions to students in the course, ensure that proper laboratory techniques are used, supervise use of equipment, and maintain lab safety.
  • The incumbent will also manage, operate, and supervise all aspects of the 5 BBL Wolfpack Brewery, including beer production with packaging in cans and kegs, quality control and testing, ordering of supplies, equipment maintenance, as well as reporting to both the ABC Commission and TTB and managing brewery finances.
  • The incumbent will be expected to maintain professional relationships with Wolfpack customers and the broader brewing community within North Carolina, including representing the brewery and its products at selected events internal and external to the university community.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree or its equivalent, demonstrated through either a combination of professional experience and other relevant degree (e.g. bachelor’s in microbiology, food science, etc.) or professional experience only.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years experience in the food or beverage industry, preferably related to beer production and/or quality control.
  • Familiarity with teaching technology, methodology, and assessment.
  • Ability to manage teaching assistants.
