Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

HDFS, one of nine departments within the School of Health and Human Sciences, is a highly collaborative, research-oriented department that values interdisciplinary study, diversity, and internationalization. The department has 24 full-time faculty, over 600 undergraduate majors, and approximately 100 graduate students in MEd, MS, and PhD programs. Students of color make up over 50% of the student population in HDFS. The department is committed to a faculty that is representative of the diverse community and student population it serves. At the undergraduate level, students prepare to work with young children by enrolling in the Birth through Kindergarten Teacher Licensure or Early Care and Education areas. At the graduate level, the Department has a master’s degree program in Birth through Kindergarten Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development and two certificate programs in early childhood. Each of these graduate and undergraduate programs is offered jointly with the Department of Specialized Services in the School of Education. HDFS faculty are highly engaged in early childhood education (ECE) research related to the quality of care children receive in early childhood settings, including studies that address the measurement of the ECE quality, children’s equitable access to high-quality ECE programs, and the effective preparation of early childhood teachers.

Position Summary:

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) seeks to fill a twelve-month Academic Professional Track (APT) Assistant or Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education in HDFS who will serve as the coordinator for student teaching and teaching internships. We are seeking a colleague whose interests focus on mentoring pre-service teachers and supervising and coordinating student teachers’ credentialing and licensing requirements. The successful candidate should have a priority of serving children and families from diverse family structures, racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds across diverse settings, as well as working with racially, ethnically and culturally diverse staff and university students.

The position has a flexible start date, but no later than August 1, 2021.

Working with a committed team of program directors and coordinators who collaboratively oversee the policies and procedures of the program, responsibilities of this position include:

1. Teaching in a multi-disciplinary Birth through Kindergarten teacher preparation program intentionally structured to prepare university students to work effectively with diverse groups of children, with and without disabilities, in inclusive and culturally responsive settings;

2. Advising and mentoring early childhood education university students/pre-service teachers from diverse racial, ethnic,
socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds;

3. Coordinating with School of Education personnel and program faculty regarding state licensure preparation and credentialing; and

4. Supporting the department through institutional and professional service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Science, Master of Education, or Master of Arts degree (requirements completed by August 1, 2021) in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Special Education, Teaching, Child Development, Human Development and Family Studies, Sociology, Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Evidence of competence in teaching and/or mentoring pre-service or in-service early educators.
  • Experience with credentialing and licensure programs.
  • Documented teaching experience in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising pre-service teachers, building relationships with community teachers and professionals, and developing placement sites.
  • Experience and knowledge of edTPA and NC licensing requirements.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities and their families.
  • Experience coordinating/administering professional or educational activities in the early childhood field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring university students representing diverse racial, socioeconomic, ability, first generation, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience with online teaching (including synchronous and asynchronous delivery method) course development and delivery.
