Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The primary purpose of the UNCG Center for Translational Biomedical Research is to conduct basic and translational research in human diseases, with focuses on biomarkers for early diagnosis of disease, understanding of disease pathogenesis and development of novel interventions for disease prevention and treatment.

Position Summary:

The position is expected to focus on organic synthesis and the application of organic chemistry to biological mass spectrometry, including organic synthesis of stable isotope labeled reagents for chemical derivatization of biomolecules to enhance the analytical sensitivity and selectivity, and synthesis of fluorescent gangliosides as molecular probes to monitor the viral replication process in live cells. In addition to bench work, this position also requires literature review, data analysis and report writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum qualifications for this position include a PhD degree in the field of Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry; fully trained in multi-step organic synthesis, chromatographic purification and spectroscopic structural characterization and has interest in application of organic chemistry to solve challenging bioanalytical problems.

The candidate for this position should be self-motivated, have critical thinking and independent working skills, possess sufficient communication skills, and the ability to work with others in a collaborative research environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of and experience in mass spectrometry is a plus.

This position will synthesize, purify and characterize stable isotope labeled analytical reagents and fluorescent ganglioside compounds within the scope of the external grants.
