Position Summary:

The Lead Payroll Accountant is responsible for handling a range of payroll-related accounting and reconciliation activities in support of the comprehensive payroll functions for both William & Mary (W&M) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Reporting to the Payroll Manager, this position will provide excellent customer service and care to the entire campus community regarding payroll needs and will oversee the daily operations of the payroll office. The critical responsibilities of the position include oversight of all payroll processing activities (leading and conducting review processes to identify and address issues during payroll processing), vendor payments, general ledger reconciliation, tax related documentation and effective configuration and utilization of the Payroll module in Banner Finance.

Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
•Lead payroll processing and work in conjunction with central Human Resources to ensure efficient and accurate processing.
•Reconciliation and preparation of all tax and related employment filings for federal and state taxing authorities
•Multi-state tax reporting and filing, including monitoring of out-of-state hiring requests
•General ledger reconciliation
•Computations of earnings, withholdings, miscellaneous deductions and related payroll information
•Perform validation of the semi-monthly payroll and generate payroll rosters
•Reconcile payroll and benefit expenditures against financial reporting records
•Identification and implementation of process improvements and Banner testing.

In this position, you will be part of a dynamic team, the Payroll department, and University Operations that works in partnership with central Human Resources and Student Employment to contribute to the well-being of all faculty, staff, and students that are working at W&M and VIMS.

Required Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business related field, or comparable education or experience that includes knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), including state and federal payroll tax reporting requirements
•Progressive financial and payroll experience, including processing payroll transactions and performing mid-level accounting functions
•Experience working with an automated accounting or payroll system.
•Knowledge of benefit withholdings, vendor payment processes, general ledger reconciliation and other payroll functions
•Skilled in researching and reconciling financial accounts, complex accounting records, Experience reviewing and assessing transactions/processes to identify potential errors, as well as opportunities for improvement and resolving accounting and payroll problems efficiently.
•Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills, with a strong customer service orientation, with the proven ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
•Excellent organizational skills with an eye for detail and accuracy and managing multiple deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Experience in higher education financial operations highly desirable
•Experience with Banner Finance
•Project supervision or acting as a team lead
•Experience researching and testing system functionality, research and testing of payroll processes and configure automated systems to meet departmental demands

Conditions of Employment::

Normal operating hours are 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Management reserves the right to establish and adjust the work schedules if necessary.

Occasional long hours required.
