Position Summary:

The Clinic Assistant provides direct supportive patient care to patients at University Health Center under the direction of nurses and clinicians. The Clinic Assistant obtains chief complaint, brief history, appropriate vital signs, current medications and allergies. The Clinic Assistant documents patient information clearly and accurately using the electronic health record system. The Clinic Assistant recognizes abnormal findings and urgent problems and seek appropriate assistance from nurse or clinician, anticipates special supplies and equipment required for the visit, assist clinicians with exams and treatments including sterile procedures, sterilizes instruments, operates the autoclave, and maintains exam room equipment and supplies.
The Clinic Assistant works closely with and collaborates with nurses, clinicians, patients, and families to support the clinic team. The Clinic Assistant reports to and is directly supervised by the Clinic Manager.
This is a 10 month position with the month’s of June and July off.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

-obtain chief complaint, brief history, appropriate vital signs, current medications and allergies.
-document patient information clearly and accurately using the electronic health record system.
-recognize abnormal findings and urgent problems and seek appropriate assistance from nurse or clinician.
-anticipate special supplies and equipment required for the visit.
-assist clinicians with exams and treatments including sterile procedures.
-accurately sterilize and autoclave instruments, and maintain exam rooms and supplies.
-provide outstanding personalized customer service to patients and others.
-work effectively with others and demonstrate consistent cooperativeness, courtesy, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity and tact in the handling of job responsibilities.
-be dependable, reliable, and punctual in attendance and performance of job responsibilities.
-manage time and job responsibilities along with multiple priorities throughout the work day.
-work reliably and independently to complete usual job responsibilities without requiring close supervision.
-demonstrate accountability for equipment, supplies, instruments and other materials/resources.

Physical Demands:

Active throughout the 8 hour work day performing typical busy medical office/clinic demands, including walking, standing, sitting, reaching, typing, bending, talking, listening, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 20 pounds.

Interviews patients and documents their chief complaint, brief medical history, appropriate vital signs, current medications and allergies. Provides care to patients and directly assists clinicians in treating patients. Provides culturally sensitive age-specific care and maintains confidentiality of patient’s information. Recognizes abnormal findings and urgent problems and informs nurse or clinician. Ensures patient and staff safety at all times.

Percentage of time:



Checks and maintains clinic supplies, surgical trays, instruments, and equipment. Stocks exam rooms and procedure rooms. Operates autoclave and sterilizes instruments.

Greets patients and answers phones. Verifies and updates contact information. Schedules appointments. Provides supporting clerical functions. Facilitates timely patient flow. Participates in the work and goals of the clinic team and promotes effective use of resources.
