This Licensed Registered Nurse – PRN position will be located within the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s (UNTHSC) – Correctional Medicine Department (CMD). This position will report to CMD’s Clinical Operations Manager.

This contract position will responsible for providing Licensed Registered Nursing Health Care Services for UNTHSC’s Comprehensive Medical Services contracts with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). These services will be provided on-site and within the secure perimeter of a Federal Bureau of Prisons correctional facility in the Fort Worth area.

Position Summary:

This contract position will provide licensed registered nursing health care services and will be scheduled on a PRN basis by UNTHSC’s Correctional Medicine Department to support the coverage needs of the designated Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide direct patient care services in accordance with all legal, ethical and institution standards.
  • Provide nursing care of a general nature to patients in the institution hospital and/or clinic setting including specialty clinics, ambulatory care, mental health, and other designated clinical areas.
  • Provide all other assigned registered nursing duties, including assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care, while under the direct supervision of a physician.
  • Develop a nursing assessment for each assigned patient, to include planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care.
  • May assess and identify high risk symptoms/behaviors in patients, to include suicidal risk, homicidal risk and risk for verbal and/or physical abuse.
  • Complete nutritional screening as part of the assessment and refers patient to a dietitian for a nutritional assessment if necessary.
  • Monitors, evaluates and revises the plan of care as needed. May also assess and document the discharge planning needs of a patient and delegates and/or coordinate care based on assessments.
  • Perform and assist with delegated clinical procedures, implement physician’s orders and record observations and evaluations of patient response in a timely and detail-oriented manner.
  • Provide direct medical care to patients including measuring and record patients’ vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration, monitoring patients’ conditions, caring for wounds, and administering medications.
  • Reinforce patient teaching, as delegated by the physician, clearly documenting all patient responses in the patient record and providing updates in the patient record, accordingly.
  • Accept and document orders from the physician consistent with facility guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Clearly communicate, verbally and in writing, patient care activities and patient conditions to appropriate parties.
  • Delivers quality nursing care while minimizing the risk of infection, contamination, harm, or injury to the patient.
  • Participate in the quality and performance improvement process, as requested, within the assigned Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.
  • All other duties as assigned within the scope of their Registered Nurse licensure to support the clinical needs of the assigned Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Texas, or an authorized Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
  • Graduatuted from an accredited School of Nursing program.
  • Possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license and clean disciplinary record (no disciplinary action ever on any nursing license).
  • Participate in continuing education as required by the State Board of Nursing.
  • Pass and comply with the security clearance process at the designated Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.
  • Maintain and update skills and knowledge related to the designated correctional environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Registered Nurses with at least two years of demonstrated RN experience in an outpatient clinic and/or inpatient setting.

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Texas, or an authorized Nurse Licensure Compact
