Position Summary

Research Assistant III to operate Talos Arctica electron microscope at the RTSF cryo-EM facility; maintain RTSF cryo-EM facility; train new users on how to operate the cryo-electron microscope.

Duties include providing research support to users by assisting in 1) Optimizing protein purification for structure determination by cryo-EM, 2) Optimizing sample preparation of biological macromolecules for structure determination by cryo-electron tomography, 3) Processing cryo-EM data utilizing various software to obtain structures of biological macromolecules, and 4) Computational modeling for high-resolution structures. Develop an independent research program, publish peer-reviewed publications, and apply for funding from federal agencies.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in the specific field of research employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research methodologies, writing reports, supervision, software, data interpretation and handling in area related to research being performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.

Department position requirements:

PhD in Biochemistry or Biophysics

One peer reviewed publication

One year post-doctoral experience to include optimizing sample preparation of any biological macromolecule for cryo-EM, use of common cryo-EM data processing software and structure determination by cryo-EM.
