Position Summary

The Hoffmann lab in the Department of Animal Science (https://www.canr.msu.edu/ans/) and the Reproductive and Developmental Science Program (RDSP, http://rdsp.canr.msu.edu/) at Michigan State University is seeking a full-time, fixed-term Laboratory Technologist 1. The Department of Animal Science and RDSP offers an exciting and unique environment for performing state-of-the-art biomedical, animal and basic research with top scientists in the field. The Hoffmann lab research goals focus on discovering novel genes involved in brain circuitry formation and are aimed at determining the genetic and molecular adaptations happening in the brain during seasonal changes in day length and shift work/jet lag conditions with a focus on the impact on reproduction and labor (https://www.canr.msu.edu/hoffmann/).

This is a 9-month, term-limited position, with end date 9 months from date of hire, and possible renewal dependent upon satisfaction of performance and renewal of funding.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Handling and caring for mice on a daily basis.
  • Running behavioral studies in mice.
  • Providing general technical assistance in support of the research team.
  • Performing routine laboratory techniques: PCR, molecular biology assays, tissue processing, circadian rhythm recordings, microscopy.
  • Maintaining lab records and protocols.
  • Following established procedures in performing tests and assays, in order to generate and record data.
  • Assists in compiling test results for future composition of reports, publications.
  • Operates, maintains and monitors research instruments and equipment.
  • Prepares solutions and mixtures, culture media.
  • Monitors and controls hazardous and other materials used in laboratory procedures.
  • Cleans, prepares and stores glassware and materials used in experiments.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related science field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.

Desired Qualifications

Well organized and meticulous candidates with a background in neuroscience, biochemistry or related, with B.A. or similar degree are welcome to apply. Experience working with mice, performing PCR and basic understanding of circadian biology is desired. One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques. The job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards.
