Division of Plant SciencesThe University of Missouri seeks an Assistant Extension Professor & State Extension Specialist to conduct applied agronomic research focused on innovative crop production systems for southeast Missouri. Extension duties include statewide leadership on best management practices for sustainable cropping systems, soil fertility, and precision soil management. The successful candidate will publish research findings in high-quality refereed journals. Equally important, the successful candidate will disseminate research-based information to producers and industry representatives via extension presentations, field days, consultations, publications, websites, and similar efforts.
The position is located at the University of Missouri’s (MU) Fisher Delta Research Center in Portageville, MO. Crops in southeast Missouri include cotton, corn, rice, soybeans, grain sorghum, as well as high-value crops such as melons, potatoes and peanuts. The soils and topography of southeast Missouri offer researchers a unique opportunity to study cropping systems, water relations, crop rotation and soil function. Precision management of soils and crops for optimum yields and quality is a central responsibility. The candidate is also to lead discovery of best management practices for water, fertilizer, insecticides, fungicides, and other crop inputs. The work will include planning, designing and conducting field experiments (including data collection and statistical analyses) with input from producers to target research and extension projects relevant to southeast Missouri. Ability to secure extramural funding and publish research and extension findings is required. Collaboration with public and private researchers, farmers, and extension specialists within Missouri and other states is expected. Availability to producers to answer questions on crop production is critical. Supporting the University of Missouri’s soil and plant testing program – including significant contributions to MU’s Soil Fertility Working Group – will be a key function.
The Fisher Delta Research Center (FDRC) (https://delta.missouri.edu/) is part of the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station and contributes to MU’s comprehensive land-grant responsibility. Its goal is to conduct high quality research that will respond to the needs of Missouri citizens, maintain and enhance our natural resource base, support a vital food and fiber system, and help keep Missouri producers competitive and profitable. FDRC staff work with campus faculty involved in teaching, research and extension along with state and federal agencies and Missouri agribusinesses to undergird education and a reliable, safe, sustainable supply of food and other agricultural products. In addition, FDRC faculty commonly collaborate with other state university faculty and staff and with industry on joint research projects that impact local, state, regional, national and international clientele. The FDRC facilities include 1,119 acres at four locations representing the major soil types of the region. In addition, the Missouri Rice Research farm consisting of 110 acres is an essential location to conduct research trials. The FDRC headquarters consists of 23 offices, seven modern laboratories, eight greenhouses, Foundation Seed cleaning and storage facilities, auditoriums, an exhibit hall, a library and an outstanding professional and support staff. This position may include the development and oversight of a soil and/or plant tissue testing laboratory located at FDRC. While the position is located at the FDRC, the successful candidate will be an integral faculty member of the Division of Plant Sciences (DPS) in Columbia, MO (https://plantsciences.missouri.edu/). As such, the candidate should expect to participate in the weekly, virtual town halls hosted by the Integrated Pest Management team and similar statewide efforts. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or Masters with five years of relevant experience in the area of agronomy, soil science, agricultural engineering, or related field. Candidates will be evaluated on: Proficiency in production practices is required, including weed and disease/insect control, fertility, tillage, and irrigation. Excellent oral skills to communicate with farmers and other commodity stakeholders and the ability to work well in a collaborative team are essential. Other skills include experience in precision agriculture (and digital technology as it relates to modernizing farming practices), the ability to secure funding, a knowledge of operating and maintaining plot and farm-scale equipment, and proven experience in data analysis, and writing (e.g., grant proposals, scientific publications, and extension publications).Application Materials A resume including a letter of application explaining suitability with qualifications sought, a list of recent publications, academic transcripts, and contact information for at least 3 references.
