Job Description:

Advising:

Serves as a knowledge base to provide comprehensive academic advising services to undergraduate Chemical Engineering students. Provide developmental academic advisement for undergraduate Chemical Engineering students, including but not limited to special populations of potential, transfer, at risk, experiential education, and visiting students. Support students in identifying and defining academic goals. Meets with students individually each semester to lift advising holds and discuss plans for future terms. Ensure each student understands academic requirements, including departmental Critical Path sequence and course pre-requisites, for timely progress toward degree. Monitor academic progress of ChE undergraduate students. Creates individual plans of study for students, processes late drops/adds for courses, and serves as point of contact for student petitions to communicate decisions made by ChE Undergraduate Program Committee. Develop materials and delivery methods to facilitate access to timely and relevant information. This includes maintaining and developing online and hard copy materials, utilize an LMS platform (currently Canvas), and other technology. Collaborate with departmental, HWCOE, and university offices on issues related to student success, including mental health needs as related to academic performance. Guide students in noncompliance, or on academic probation. Assess level of academic success skills and behaviors. Establish milestones. Operationalize path to increase academic success. Increase retention. Maintain proficient knowledge of regulations and procedures, utilizing professional, federal, state, university, college, and program resources. Embrace professional development activities designed to improve advising quality. Attend Engineering Undergraduate Advising Council, University Advising Council, and professional meetings, and conferences, as appropriate. Collaborate with departmental, HWCOE, and university offices on issues related to student success, including mental health needs as related to academic performance. Assess and monitor the advising program on a continual basis to identify and make refinements to improve academic advising.

Student Recruitment and Career Development:

Develop, maintain, and evaluate student recruitment, retention, academic success, and leadership programs. Represent Chemical Engineering at on and off campus recruiting events. Participate in student engagement activities, such as Preview, Transfer Orientation, university service courses, and convocations. Answer admissions inquiries, arrange tours or refer to campus resources. Collaborate with student organizations and advising community to develop and maintain innovative extracurricular engagement opportunities for students. Maintains inventory of brochures from college & graduate school information for distribution to prospective students. Monitors internship and research applications and reminds students of deadlines. Organize departmental academic events such as recruitment, professional development, campus information sessions/tours for prospective students, etc. Participates in college and university events such as majors fair, e-fair, etc. Interface with alumni and professional contacts to keep abreast of dynamic educational and professional expectations. Assists college with High School AA Preview during the summer for ChE students. Apply concepts to comprehensive advising services. Seek student employment, internship, and cooperative education opportunities. Write letters of recommendation and international letters of support. In collaboration with the Academic Advisor III, evaluate and rank student applications for awards.

Program Maintenance:

Initiates, composes & signs routine program correspondence. Compiles & coordinates undergraduate program catalog information. Prepares undergraduate program brochure. Creates departmental forms for undergraduate program. Develops the schedule of courses for ChE Department and prepares and processes new course transmittal forms and termination/modifying course forms. Processes and submits grades for courses and change of grade forms. Reports course delivery methods and submits graders/instructors for ChE courses. Maintains student database. Collection of course textbook adoptions and syllabi. Compile statistics and prepare reports for the ChE department and COE. Research and recommend policies, processes and procedures. Ensure accuracy of informational resources, such as catalog, website, and hardcopy materials. Recording of meeting minutes for Undergraduate Program Committee. Responsible for developing content for ChE website with student related information (student directory, course listings, posting events, student forms). Organizes scholarship review and rankings for the department. Assists with ABET accreditation as needed.

Monitor Curriculum requirements:

Utilize and maintain student and advising records, such as: forms, petitions, probation contracts, and course substitutions, in accordance with state/federal law and university regulations. Ensure records accuracy on the degree audit and student records systems. Assist students with the Honors thesis and defense processes. Ensure that forms are approved and submitted. Contribute to BSChE degree candidate and Biomolecular minor certification. Assist in program and curriculum evaluation. Research and recommend policies, processes and procedures, as requested. Ensure accuracy of informational resources, such as catalog, website, and hardcopy materials. Add student information to ChE Advising Canvas page, undergraduate listserv, and building access. Maintain university certifications.

Transfer and Readmission Processing:

Review and evaluate transfer and readmission student applications and transcripts for competitive program placement. Process applications. Utilize the Transferology system. Confer with department and college advising faculty and staff to determine transfer admission policies, procedures, and admission of applicants. Develop informational materials, answer admissions inquiries, meet with, and arrange tours for, potential students. Participate in Transfer Orientation. Communicate with transfer students and ensure that the pertinent processes are completed. Matches incoming transfer ChE students to peer advisors.

Other Duties:

Assist professors with academic issues, including course information, resources, policies, procedures, and security access. Provide support, as a back-up, to advising faculty and staff, including the graduate program. Meet with students, teachers, and counselors from state colleges and high schools, as needed. Other duties as assigned by Chair, Associate Chair, or Undergraduate Coordinator.

Expected Salary:

$41,900 - $50,000; commensurate with qualifications and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor's area of responsibility; or a bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor's area of responsibility and one year of relevant experience.
