Computational Biologist (2 Year Fixed Term)🔍School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States📁Information Analytics📅May 13, 2021 Post Date📅89086 Requisition #The Idoyaga Lab in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine (http://idoyagalab.stanford.edu) is seeking a Computational Biologist (Biostatistician 2) to join our lab and work on dendritic cells. The lab is taking an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to unravel the function and dysfunction of dendritic cells in the context of health and disease that includes the use of high-dimensional approaches such as mass cytometry (CyTOF), scRNAseq and ATACseq. The Computational Biologist will develop and apply state-of-the-art statistical and computational methods to interpret high-throughput proteomic, transcriptomic and epigenetic measurements from clinical samples and relevant mouse model systems. The Computational Biologist will also be responsible for maintaining in-house and established computational pipelines for high throughput omics analyses. The work will contribute to our overall mission of narrowing the gap between human and mouse dendritic cell biology to enable the development of dendritic cell-based therapeutics. We are looking for creative and passionate people at any stage of their careers, including senior computational biologists. The ideal candidate should have expertise in statistical methods of data analysis, fluency in standard programming and data analysis languages, interest in mentoring and training other lab members in computational biology and statistics, and knowledge of cell biology/immunology or related fields. The Computational Biologist will interact with experimental dendritic cell biologists to outline, test, validate and refine hypotheses, as well as devise new analysis plans. She/He will present results and progress updates, contribute to manuscript preparation, and will be expected to remain up to date on advances in immunology by attending seminars, journal clubs and reading relevant literature. Duties include:

  • Design study.
  • Develop and implement protocol for quality control.
  • Create analytic files with detailed documentation.
  • Select appropriate statistical tools for addressing a given research question.
  • Implement data analysis through statistical programming.
  • Present results for investigators using graphs and tables.
  • Summarize findings orally and in written form.
  • Participate in the preparation of papers for publication.
  • Consult with investigators on appropriate statistical approaches to data analyses; assist in study design and proposal development.
  • Mentor collaborators in areas of experimental design, quality control, and statistical analysis
  • Develop oral and written dissemination of findings for conference presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Oversee lower-level staff on issues related to quality control and creation of analysis files.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Suggested: PhD in computer science, biostatistics, computational biology or related field. Talented applicants of all levels are encouraged to apply.
  • Expected to have a strong background in genomic data (or other biologic large data set) analysis, biostatistics, bioinformatics or machine learning, and it should be accompanied by a relevant publication record.
  • Experience with analysis of sequencing data.
  • Manipulation and analyses of complex high-dimensional data.
  • Fluency in multiple programming languages (Python, R, JavaScript, C++) and databases.
  • Experience with deep learning approaches.
  • Experience as a data scientist.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with experimental technologies in immunology, e.g., flow cytometry, mass cytometry, sequencing. Background on dendritic cell biology is a plus.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience mentoring and training other lab members in computational biology and statistics.
  • Creative and organized.
  • Highly motivated to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment with a team of enthusiastic scientists.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Master's degree in biostatistics, statistics, computational biology, bioinformatics or related field and at least 3 years of experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Proficient in at least two of R, SAS, SPSS, or STATA.
  • Skills in descriptive analysis, modeling of data, and graphic interfaces.
  • Outstanding ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated excellence in at least one area of expertise, which may include coordinating studies; statistical methodology such as missing data, survival analysis, statistical genetics, or informatics; statistical computing; database design (e.g., expertise in RedCAP or MySQL); graphical techniques (e.g., expertise in Illustrator).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, and write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
