Director Of Communications - Vice Chancellor Diversity & Engagement

Regular Full-time, Market Range MR11

The Division of Diversity and Engagement needs full-time director, coordinating and executing internal and external communications needs. This position will report to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Engagement, and work closely with the Office of Communications and Marketing. The successful candidate will: 
Generate awareness around strategic DDE priorities and campus-wide initiatives around diversity, equity and inclusion
 Work with DDE leadership to develop and coordinate communications strategy
 Manage Communication and content-generation Process aligned with communications strategy
 Maintain website, social media platforms and print materials
 Work to prevent and identify known, foreseeable, and potential media/community issues related to DEI in coordination with the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM)
 Write, edit, proofread, and distribute communication materials in response to diversity, equity, and inclusion issues on campus, in coordination with OCM.
 Provides leadership for information and data collection for presentations and communications shared with internal and externals partners about impacts.


Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Provides leadership and coordination for the creation and distribution of digital and/or print content:
-Regularly updates division-level website content.
-Maintains and manages social media (i.e.Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) presence for the Division of Diversity and Engagement. 
-Creates fliers and other marketing materials for campus-wide events and initiatives.
-With input from senior leadership, designs and distributes divisional newsletter, annual reports, impact summaries, and other materials for the division and other central offices such as the Office of Equity and Diversity and the Office of Community Engagement and Outreach.

Coordinates event-related communications, including:
-Division calendar of events and associated communications;
-Event support;
-Event photography, videography needs.

Provides organizational communications support for projects, by:
-Preparing and using matrices to help track data;
-Conducting benchmarking and other research;
-Fostering collaborations to strategize and manage approaches for large and complex projects.

Researches and prepares presentations for Vice Chancellor and other senior team members.
-Provides leadership for information and data collection for presentations and communications shared with internal and externals partners about impacts.
-Creates and manages templates (i.e. PowerPoint) for the division.



Bachelor's degree in Communications, advertising, public relations, marketing, journalism or related field required.

Master's degree in Communications, advertising, public relations, marketing, journalism or related field preferred.

Required level/type of experience:

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree in communications, advertising, public relations,marketing, journalism, or related field. 
If the candidate has earned a degree in communications or related field, 6 years of related experience required. Relevant experience includes working in the university setting, communications, project management, and other high-level initiatives that involve multitasking in a fast-paced environment.


Prefrred level/type of experience:

Progressive responsibility leading to success in marketing and communication. Marketing and Communication experience related to higher education is highly desirable.
Demonstrated experience in building a positive and collaborative team environment.
Demonstrated success in building a brand in a complex environment.
Strong alignment with the strategic goals of a with a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and an ability to integrate these values into strategic marketing and communication plans and actions.
Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with proven ability to build collaborative working relationships and lead and support both creative and technical teams.
Strong understanding of digital and social media.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills and strong presentation skills.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Ability to advise the Vice Chancellor and Senior DDE Leadership on communications strategies to positively advance the university's mission and vision.
Excellent journalistic, verbal and written communication skills with ability to develop and implement a multi-faceted communications plan involving web, social, video, print, and spoken word.
Demonstrated ability to build, develop and effectively lead a productive team.
Understanding and experience in social media as part of a communications strategy.
Advanced knowledge of the academic and administrative structure of universities, as well as trends and emerging issues in the realm of higher education at a state and national level strongly preferred.


Excellent oral, written and analytical skills
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse constituencies
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that requires multi-tasking
Ability to synthesize multiple sources of information into various formats (web content, presentations, emails, etc.)
Ability to create on-brand graphic design content using provided templates, and appropriate software (e.g. Illustrator, Canva, InDesign) 
Ability to take photos and video
Skilled in use of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, YouTube)
Knowledge of website maintenance
Knowledge of electronic communications software (Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, WordPress)
