Departmental Overview

Cal Youth Programs & Camps continue to uphold the Cal tradition of excellence. Since 1960, we have offered a wide variety of safe, enriching, recreational summer camps, and year round activities and experiences for kids of all ages. Visit us at http://recsports.berkeley.edu/youth-programs/

Responsibilities

Youth Program Instructors provide instruction, and support to enrolled Recreational Youth participants as assigned in a camp or interim recreational program environment. Youth Program Instructors are further responsible for developing lesson plans that correspond with assigned classes and activities, providing feedback to youth participants, and supporting the upkeep of the recreational facilities and outdoor spaces in support of providing a safe and nurturing environment. Other program related tasks may be assigned as needed or appropriate.

Youth Program Instructors provide instruction and support to the following camps:

A. Blue Camp & Explorer Camp Staff Positions

• Group Leader: Group Leaders provide supervision to campers at Explorer and Blue Camps. Group Leaders are supervised by the Camp Lead and the Assistant Camp Lead(s).
• Activity Instructor: Activity Instructors provide supervision and instruction to campers at Cal Youth Camps. Activity Instructors are supervised by the Camp Lead and the Assistant Camp Lead(s).
• Cal Adventures Camp Staff Positions
• Under the supervision of the Youth Program Manager, a Cal Adventures Activity Instructor will lead groups of 8-17 year-olds in a specific skill area. Cal Adventures activities include sailing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, stand-up paddle boarding, windsurfing, general outdoor recreation, and leadership development.

B. Martial Arts Camp Staff Positions

• Martial Arts Camp Instructors: provide supervision and instruction to campers. Activity Instructors are supervised by the Camp Coordinator.

C. Gymnastics Camp Staff Positions

• Gymnastics Program Instructors provide supervision and instruction to campers enrolled in Gymnastics Camp with Golden Bears Youth Gymnastics. Gymnastics Program Instructors are supervised by the Head Coach and the Lead Recreation Program Coach.

D. Skateboarding Camp Staff Positions

• Skateboarding Program Instructors provide supervision and instruction to campers enrolled in Skate Camp with Cal Youth Skateboarding.

Key Responsibilities for all Youth Program Instructors include:

I. PLANNING AND PROGRAMMATIC DEVELOPMENT

• Assist with parent orientations and check-in and check-out procedures.
• Promote theme days or group traditions to help campers and staff feel united as a group and add enjoyment to the camp.
• Look for ways to make camp better and share those in your weekly team leader meetings.
• Ensure campers have safe and appropriate equipment, facilities, and supplies.
• Keep equipment, binder, and supplies in order, well maintained, and in the proper location
• Complete and submit paperwork accurately (timesheets, lesson plans,
• certifications, etc.)
• Accept feedback and makes necessary corrections
• Conduct daily check of activity area for safety and cleanliness; make needed improvements or report needs to a supervisor or team leader
• Assist with, lead, and/or participate in all special events, staff meetings, and programs designated by your

II. PROGRAM INSTRUCTION & FACILITATION

• Teach age-appropriate skills and activities in a progressive sequence and/or assist with leading activities as assigned by supervisor
• Prepare and submit a specific lesson plan or activity for each activity session; plan progressive lessons with any co-counselors based on campers' ages and skill levels
• Run organized and well-executed classes where there is maximum opportunity for participation in diverse activities that are creative and engaging
• Actively participate and engage with all campers
• Connect the camp values and life skills to the activities in a developmentally appropriate manner
• Promote theme days or group traditions to help campers feel united as a group
• Help all campers make friends and enjoy the camp experience

III. MISCELLANEOUS

• Provide general supervision, risk management, and downtime activities for youth participants
• Develop age appropriate relationships with campers and identify and meet individual campers' needs
• Help campers leave their comfort zones and take healthy risks while improving knowledge and skill
• Account for all campers, take attendance regularly and follow check-in/out procedures
• Walk campers safely between locations and supervise on water/bathroom breaks
• Assist campers with belongings, lost and found, sunscreen/water, trash pick-up, etc.
• Assist and guide campers in resolving their own problems and step-in only when necessary #lifeskills
• Supervise and coach junior staff and CILTs working in your area, providing direction and feedback if necessary.
• Motivate campers and junior staff to enthusiastically participate in all activities
• Provide summer camp instruction to children (ages 5 - 16) in one or more of the following areas: archery, arts and crafts, badminton, baseball, basketball, card games, chess, dance, dance (hip hop), drama, field hockey, football, Frisbee, golf, in-line hockey, lacrosse, leadership, magic, motor fitness, music, nature studies, rugby, self- defense, skateboarding, soccer, softball, table tennis, tae kwon do, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and yoga.
• Maintain a supportive environment for program participants and facilitate involvement.

Required Qualifications

Blue Camp & Explorer Camp Staff Positions

• Group Leader: Group Leaders must have experience with children (ages 5 and older). Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Group Leaders must have the ability to exercise good judgment and safely supervise children. Group Leaders must also have the sensory abilities (e.g. hearing, seeing) necessary to perform the duties of the position required.
• Activity Instructor: Activity instructors must have experience with children (ages 5 and older). Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Instructors must be skilled in the activity that will be taught and/or have received formal training in activity. Instructors must also have the ability to exercise good judgment and safely supervise children. Experience teaching activity as an instructor, coach, etc. is required. Instructors must also have the sensory abilities (e.g. hearing, seeing) necessary to perform the duties of the position required.

Cal Adventures Camp Staff Positions

• Cal Adventures activities include sailing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, stand-up paddle boarding, windsurfing, general outdoor recreation, and leadership development. A minimum of Community First Aid and CPR certification and extensive experience teaching one or more of the skill areas is required. Instructors for Discovery and Adventure Camps are also asked to have a valid California Driver's License.

Martial Arts Camp Staff Positions

• Martial Arts Camp Instructors must have experience with children (ages 5 and older). Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Instructors must be skilled and/or have familiarity with Martial Arts (Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Judo) and/or have received formal training in activity. Instructors must also have the ability to exercise good judgment and safely supervise children. Experience teaching activity as an instructor, coach, etc. is required. Instructors must also have the sensory abilities (e.g. hearing, seeing) necessary to perform the duties of the position required.

Gymnastics Camp Staff Positions

• Gymnastics Program Instructors must have experience leading recreational gymnastics activities for children (ages 4 and older). Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Gymnastics Program Instructors must also have the ability to exercise good judgment and safely supervise children. Experience teaching activity as a gymnastics instructor, coach, etc. is required. Instructors must also have the sensory abilities (e.g. hearing, seeing) necessary to perform the duties of the position required.

Skateboarding Camp Staff Positions

• Skateboarding Program Instructors must have experience leading recreational program with children (ages 7 and older). Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Instructors must be skilled in Skateboarding and have received formal training in the activity. Applicants must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills. Gymnastics Program Instructors must also have the ability to exercise good judgment and safely supervise children. Skateboarding Instructors must also have the sensory abilities (e.g. hearing, seeing) necessary to perform the duties of the position required.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent certification preferred.

Some college or Associate Degree and/or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
