The Social & Decision Analytics Division (SDAD) of the Biocomplexity Institute and initiative (BII) at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Specialist to provide data analysis and research support to our collaborative, team-science oriented group.
The Biocomplexity Institute and initiative performs world-class informatics research in life sciences, social sciences, and human health by integrating theory, modeling and simulation with computational and experimental science in a transdisciplinary, team science research environment. Within the institute, the Social & Decision Analytics Division combines expertise in statistics and social and behavioral sciences to develop evidence-based research and quantitative methods to inform policy decision-making and evaluation. The researchers at SDAD span many disciplines including statistics, economics, sociology, psychology, political science, policy, health IT, public health, program evaluation, and data science.
The position will be located in BII's location in Arlington, VA. Due to the current conditions as a result of COVID-19, this position has the potential to begin on a teleworking basis with the expectation to work onsite when it is deemed safe to do so.
- Performing detailed data acquisition and preparation.
- Supporting data analysis development and execution.
- Assisting with software/user interface development to support researchers and research dissemination.
- Help authoring materials for publication and presentation.
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience with programming languages such at R, Phyton, QGIS, ArcGIS, Tableau
- Experience with data cleaning procedures and preparing datasets for analysis
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Be motivated, enthusiastic, and self-driven.
- Ability to excel in a highly collaborative team science environment.
Preference will be given to those applicants with:
- Research assistant experience
- Experience with quantitative policy analysis

All roles within the institute are restricted positions and are dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. These are one-year appointments; however, appointments may be renewed for an additional two, one-year increments, contingent upon satisfactory performance, the continued available funding and business need.
