Department Description:

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1975, is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.

The Vincent laboratory investigates the anti-tumor immune response in the context of immunotherapy, specifically what tumor and immune characteristics predict which patients will respond to treatment. One focus of the lab is genomics and cellular therapy approaches to analyzing anti-tumor immunity. Another focus of the laboratory is on genetic analyses of T cell receptor repertoires in cancer. Another focus of the lab is characterization of the tumor-specific lymphocytic infiltrate in mouse models and human tumors. Current studies of this type involve flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, ex vivo cellular functional studies, multi-omics tumor and immune microenvironment profiling, and T cell engineering. For this work, our laboratory utilizes novel and classical molecular biology techniques in combination with cellular immunology and next-generation sequencing. Our primary goal is to better understand the tumor immune microenvironment in order to develop more effective, curative immunotherapy strategies for advanced cancer.

Equal Opportunity Employer:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, race, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or status as a protected veteran.

Position Description:

This position is for a Laboratory Manager for the Tumor Immunogenomics Lab (TIL) initiative that will be a collaborative research program between Dr. Vincent, Dr. Alexander Rubinsteyn (Assisant Professor of Genetics, Computational Medicine Program), and Dr. Jared Weiss (Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology). TIL will integrate the wet lab research portfolios of Drs. Vincent, Rubinsteyn, and Weiss in the areas of antigen identification and targeting via novel therapeutics, including work being done in therapeutic neoantigen vaccination and epitope-optimized SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. The person filling this role will need to manage multiple discrete projects (including inventory, purchasing, and budgeting) and supervise and train multiple lab-based personnel concurrently. Project management work will include designing, executing, troubleshooting, and supervising experiments, informed by the scientific literature and with input and direction from the principal investigator. This will require a high degree of scientific independence. This person will also need to prepare formal scientific communications including reports, presentations, manuscripts, and figures/text for funding proposals.

This specific laboratory work associated with this position includes characterization of the circulating and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte populations in human tumors and associated murine models. This work also includes analyses of the genetic diversity of T cell receptor (TCR) repertoires and gene-expression profiling using next-generation sequencing and single-cell sorting and sequencing techniques in the same models. Further, this work involves characterization of the immune response to immunotherapies in multiple clinical trials and using this knowledge to translate understanding into preclinical experiments to test novel therapeutic strategies. Experiments will be done in multiple tumor types. This position will require the person filling it to be a part of a multidisciplinary team with regular contact with practicing medical oncologists and scientists from other disciplines within the cancer center. Finally, the person filling this position should have a high degree of capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including well-developed skills in project management, supervision of experimentalists, and training of lab members in relevant assay techniques.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

The applicant must have deep expertise in flow cytometry, ELISA, and processing biological samples for therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The applicant must have experience in scientific project management, including expertise in process development, process management, budgeting, and reporting.

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioinformatics/Computational Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Genetics, Immunology, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology, or Zoology. Experience with project management and sample tracking with LIMS, mLIMS and/or similar systems.

Position/Schedule Requirements:

Laboratory, Overtime occasionally

Stimulus/ARRA Funded:

No
