Job Details

Princeton University

Two postdoctoral research associate or more senior positions are available through Princeton University's Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). The positions are also affiliated with Princeton's Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment and School of Public and International Affairs. Applications are encouraged from individuals with research interests in the current and future decarbonization of India's energy system and a PhD in one of the following disciplines: (a) cognitive or social psychology or other social or behavioral sciences related to household or collective decision making and (b) energy systems modeling and analysis. The positions are with Rapid Switch, a multi-disciplinary collaboration, including researchers in the U.S., China, India, and Australia, that seeks to identify pathways to accelerate decarbonization of energy systems by assessing bottlenecks, barriers and resistive forces. Factors that can retard the pace of transition are diverse: industrial bottlenecks (technological challenges, natural resource availability and constraints in material supplies and manufacturing capacity), regulatory limitations, economic forces and fiscal constraints, political constraints and competing goals, collective action problems, consumer preferences and fears, lack of public acceptance, resistance by incumbent industries, rational and irrational influences on public and private investment decisions, and others. Bottlenecks and resistive forces are likely to be exacerbated in key countries like India, where the global decarbonization agenda may be subordinate to economic growth and other national development priorities and stands in conflict with historical equity and justice considerations. Understanding India's ability to shift to a low-carbon energy path without compromising its development agenda will be crucial to achieving global decarbonization ambitions. Applicants should have a strong background, including PhD, in a relevant social or behavioral science (e.g., psychology, sociology, behavioral economics, management) or a relevant science or engineering discipline. We are specifically seeking candidates with interest and experience in applied, interdisciplinary research with strong modelling and/or analytical skills and, preferably, demonstrated ability working with scientists and engineers in international field settings. Candidates should also have enthusiasm for engaging with other researchers at Princeton carrying out disciplinary and interdisciplinary energy-system decarbonization studies in a variety of regional settings including India. Candidates must have excellent English written and spoken communication skills. Candidates will may also be asked to also participate in the teaching program contingent upon course enrollments and the approval of the Dean of the Faculty, or in other academic activities for up to the equivalent of one course per academic year, with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty. The appointment will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year, based on performance and availability of funding. Successful candidates may start as early as July 1, 2021 depending on University travel restrictions and the ability for us to welcome the candidate to campus. Work may begin remotely prior to being in person. Interested applicants should apply online at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/20061 and submit a CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references. These positions are subject to the University's background check policy. Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
