The barista position promotes coffee consumption by educating customers; selling coffee and coffee grinding and brewing equipment, accessories, and supplies; preparing and serving a variety of coffee drinks, along with pastries and cookies. This position assists in the care, cleaning of the café and stocking of café disposables, grab and go food items and beverages.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

BARISTA

Prepares and sells coffee drinks by following prescribed recipes and preparation techniques for coffee drinks, such as: espresso, espresso lungo, caffe latte, and cappuccino. Sells coffees and coffee grinding & brewing equipment by explaining the differences in coffee beans and coffee preparation machines; demonstrates how brewing equipment operates.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Welcomes and engages customers by determining their coffee interests and needs. Educates customers by presenting and explaining the coffee drink menu; answering questions, as needed. Works with and supports student interns and student employees. Generates revenues by attracting new customers; defines new and expanded services and products. Enhances coffee shop reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & INVENTORY 

Ensures all café areas are clean & tidy. Ensures coolers are stocked with freshly rotated food items. Maintains inventories by replenishing coffee bean supply; stocking coffee brewing equipment; maintaining supplies, pastries, and cookies for the coffee bar. Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoots breakdowns; maintains supplies; performs preventative maintenance; calls for repairs. Maintains safe and healthy work environment by following organization standards and sanitation regulations. Improves quality results by studying, evaluating, and re-designing processes; implements changes; maintains and improves the appearance of the store and coffee bar.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Availability to work within operating hours. Attends all required meetings and trainings. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading coffee, retail trade, and food service publications; maintaining personal networks.

Working Conditions

Restaurant environment on all three floors of the Hospitality building and occasionally in other areas on and away from campus. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: current café/coffee industry trends; technology and equipment; procedures, regulations, and standards; local, state and federal food sanitation regulations; operational knowledge of professional coffee machines and café equipment and maintenance requirements.

Skill in: verbal and written communications; maintaining good public relations; customer service; conflict resolution; general typing; application of job software programs; time management and organization; problem-solving under pressure; constantly assessing and adapting to current practices to perform a task better, faster, or more efficiently; process and performance improvement; preparing coffee based beverages and other café fare; math, specifically as it relates to cash handling; customer service.

Ability to: work in a team environment and motivate team members to sustain high levels of performance; proactively prioritize needs and effectively manage resources; learn new techniques, methods, and new ways to utilize ingredients; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, students, telephone users and general public; think creatively to find solutions for business problems; perform complex tasks and prioritize multiple projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED. One (1) year of work experience in a full-service coffee shop, and hands-on experience working with professional coffee machines and café equipment. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
