The Campus Safety and Security Officer positions are considered an essential position meaning the employees are expected to report to work even if the College is closed for weather or other emergencies. Camps Safety and Security Officers must work nights, weekends, and holidays. Some overtime and occasional changes of shifts is required. Due to the nature of the position, must respond to emergencies as needed.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide a safe and secure environment for the college communities.
  • Respond to all accidents or injuries occurring on College property and assess medical needs.
  • Enforce safety regulations, state laws, and College rules and regulations.
  • Engage the community on a daily basis on a non-law enforcement level.
  • Conduct patrols to respond to emergencies, and provide services to our communities.
  • Identify safety hazards and conditions.
  • Prepare incident reports and related written communication.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Able to gain certification as a Special State Police Officer with either a full-time Massachusetts municipal or State Police academy, or a MA Reserve/Intermittent Academy PLUS a degree in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Have or be able to obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms or FID.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, CPR/AED and First Responder certification.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills, as well as exercise diplomacy, and function efficiently under extreme conditions.
  • Preference is given to candidates with experience in the law enforcement field.
  • Must be proficient in interacting with a diverse community.

Hiring Process

  • Candidates must submit three letters of reference prior to final offer of employment.
  • Qualified individuals are invited for interviews; undergo a personal, criminal, and employment background check; and medical and psychological pre-screening exams. This process generally lasts 4-6 weeks depending on the candidate pool.
  • New officers must successfully complete a 10-week field training field training program rotating through the shifts to learn the skills necessary to be successful.
  • Following field training, specific campus and shift assignment is based on a seniority shift bid every six months. However, officers are assigned to all three campuses for cross-campus coverage as needed.

The Campus Safety and Security Department is an accredited progressive community policing agency with strong service orientation.
