Postdoctoral Scholar - Cognitive Neuroscience - Weiner and Bunge Laboratory - Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute

The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute (HWNI) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar - Employee position, specifically in the area of cognitive neuroscience.

This NIH-funded project involves a collaboration with a functional neuroanatomist (PI Kevin Weiner) and a developmental cognitive neuroscientist (PI Silvia Bunge), and leverages one or more longitudinal multimodal brain imaging datasets.

This individual will work on a project exploring the functional significance of tertiary sulci in association cortices. Despite major advances in our understanding of human brain development, we still know very little about whether and how the emergence of sulci influences the maturation of brain function and behavior. In this project, we focus on sulci in lateral prefrontal and parietal cortices that have been overlooked for over a century, and use modern behavioral and brain imaging techniques to elucidate their role in the emergence of higher cognitive functions. The postdoctoral scholar, in collaboration with a graduate student, will explore longitudinal relations between sulcal anatomy, white matter tracts, task-based brain activation, functional connectivity, and/or cognitive performance.

Specific duties will include the following:
The Postdoctoral Scholar will manage a large longitudinal dataset, conduct brain imaging data analysis, coordinate with - and help to train - lab members, take the lead on writing and revising manuscripts, and present results locally and at conferences.

Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application):
  • Completion of all Ph.D. or equivalent international degree requirements except the dissertation.

    Additional Qualifications (required by start date):
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent international degree.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Established publication record in human cognitive neuroscience.
  • Experience with brain imaging data analysis: structural MRI, diffusion-weighted imaging data, and/or fMRI.
  • Strong quantitative skills and command of statistics.
  • Experience with longitudinal data analysis.
  • Familiarity with best practices in open science.
  • Highly developed organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong or moderately good writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    Appointment:
    This position reports to Dr. Kevin Weiner and Dr. Silvia Bunge. The anticipated start date will be between July 2021, and August 2021. This position is full-time (100%). Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we also emphasize that all data can be accessed and analyzed remotely. The initial appointment will be for one year. Thereafter, extension of the appointment is subject to the Postdoctoral Scholar (PX) bargaining agreement according to rank and step, availability of funds, and performance and productivity.
