University Communications, part of the Office of External Relations, provides support and campus leadership in planning, coordination and implementation of strategic communications programs that support Stanford University and its mission. University Communications is responsible for brand positioning and strategy; issues and reputation management; crisis communications; oversight of digital content and top-level web and social media platforms; media relations and news services; executive communications with all constituencies; major publications; and a campus video productions studio and video production group. University Communications coordinates with communications professionals across the university, provides leadership to the Communications Working Group, and advises on communications policy with senior executive staff.

The University Governance Writer will plan and produce content in a range of key institutional areas, including coverage of university governing entities such as the Faculty Senate and the Board of Trustees.


  • Develop and research ideas for written publication/communication on high visibility, complex topics.
  • Research, develop, execute and manage high-profile written publications/communications that:
    • articulate the goals and vision in a way that is understandable and meaningful to various constituencies,
    • demonstrate understanding of a wide variety of audiences,
    • identify key information, messages and topics,
    • clearly and credibly communicate a diverse array of topics,
    • enhance the relevance and impact of intended messaging.
  • Develop, compile and edit supplemental materials that support written communication (i.e., backgrounders, biographies, executive talking points, and other related materials).
  • Establish and maintain extensive contacts with key sources (including university leadership) to identify story themes and newsworthy events to promote and disseminate information.
  • Maintain high-level interactions with specialized constituents to promote departmental goals, visions, and strategies.
  • Manage the writing process that is complex in nature reaching across organizational levels.
  • Assist the department head in evaluating workflow, resources, and make recommendations.
  • Maintain a commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant work experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. Journalism major preferred. Experience working in a university/higher education setting strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing, interpersonal, and oral communication skills with proven ability to present, write, edit, and organize thoughts in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to report on detailed discussions in real time and produce an article of 1,000-1,500 words within a few hours of the event.
  • Ability to synthesize materials from a written or verbal presentation into short, accessible summaries.
  • Experience in analyzing a wide range of situations and using sound professional judgement.
  • Possess sufficient experience to be well-regarded across campus and to work effectively with a wide range of campus constituencies, including senior university leadership, chair and other members of the Board of Trustees; vice presidents, deans, faculty members, and others.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Proven success in writing for publication in print, web, and other platforms.
  • Ability to understand complex materials and synthesize across multiple sources to produce materials for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to change voice and writing style to fit a particular audience and purpose.
  • Firm understanding of web technologies and applications, including social networking, social media tools, and current communication trends.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and able to interact effectively with a diverse array of people, including senior leaders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee all aspects of the writing process.
  • Demonstrated advanced writing skills and the ability to synthesize materials from multiple sources.
  • Extensive experience managing and coordinating complex writing projects.
  • Expert level knowledge of job-required tools and applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and apply ingenuity and creativity in solving complex problems.
