Academic and Career Exploration Coach - Career Development & Academic Exploration

Regular Full-time, Market Range MR07

The Academic and Career Exploration Coach's primary responsibility is to provide career coaching to exploratory students and academic advising to students in transition (students released from colleges or not admitted into major of choice).  Through individual appointments, classroom instruction, and program delivery, this position assists students with the selection of majors and career goals and provides opportunities to explore industries of interest.

Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Career Coaching and Academic Advising:
- Conduct individual and group career coaching sessions for exploratory students. 
- Academically advise students in transition between academic colleges and transfer/readmitted students who fail to gain admission to the college of their first choice. 
- Interpret assessments, e.g., Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Clifton Strengths and others for individuals and groups.
- Understand UT's advising model, curriculum, and academic policies in order to effectively assist students. 
- Utilize Handshake and EAB Navigate systems to maintain advising case notes and career education statistics. 
- Collaborate with the Transfer Center to meet with transfer students in the admissions application process. 
- Provide academic advising during transfer orientation sessions. 
- Participate in various local, state, regional, and national organizations such as NACADA and NCDA. - Participate in professional development activities to ensure professional growth and knowledge needed to provide effective leadership and stay abreast of emerging trends in advising and career development.

Career Programming and Education: 
- Create and implement experiential learning programs such as VolTreks and shadowing to help students gain exposure to careers and industries to assist with career decision making.
-Implement major and career programs to help undecided students create a career plan.
-Collaborate with the academic advising community to develop industry-specific programs utilizing employers and alumni.
-Create learning outcomes for programs and assess the effectiveness. 
-Develop college/industry specific resources for the advising community to utilize with students. 
-Support Exploring Majors and Careers courses through curricular planning and/or teaching. 

Campus Engagement and Program Coordination: 
- Present academic and major planning seminars to First Year Studies 101 and Transition 201 classes.
- Respond to faculty and staff requests for career exploration programs for various classes, organizations and departments.
- Support retention and graduation efforts of the university through collaborations with programs such as Math Camp, LEAD Summer Institute, Volunteer Bridge Program etc.  
- Assist in representing the Center for Career Development orientation, welcome week, admissions, and first-year experience programs. 

 Other Respsonsibilities:
- Assist in maintaining "What Can I Do With This Major?" website through research and updates. 
- Assist with departmental activities, events, and programs that are in line with the Center for Career Development's mission, including career fairs, first destination data collection, and other major initiatives. 
- Other duties as assigned to support the work of the department and Division

Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:

Master's degree in counseling, college student personnel, education, or related field required.

Counselor certification or National Development Associate creditial preferred.

Required level/type of experience:

- One academic year experience (which could include graduate assistantships) working with college students or other populations in an advising, coaching, counseling, or teaching capacity.

Preferred leve//type of experience:

- Career coaching experience, including the interpretation of B-level psychological assessments, e.g., Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

- Academic advising experience

- Knowledge of career advising theories

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilties:

- Developed skills and techniques in counseling, coaching, and advising

- Knowledge of academic curriculum and academic policies, and how majors relate to careers

- Knowledge of developmental issues of college students and demonstrated sensitivity to multicultural issues

- Ability to utilize higher education assessment models, especially those applicable to counseling services and student development/services.

Competencies/Qualifications:

Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral, written, and listening communication capabilities - Skills to develop and implement engaging student programs related to decision-making and career services - Ability to maintain confidentiality of student counseling sessions
