Staff Nurse Sports Medicine- Student Health Center

[DIRECT PATIENT CARE DUTIES] Interview patient to determine reason for visit; Perform assessment procedures (e.g. temperature, blood pressure, vision screening, etc.) as indicated by patient’s symptoms; Initiate nursing preliminary treatment plan by assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and formulating plan of care based on initial assessment; Anticipate physician’s needs based on findings; Perform nursing procedures as indicated based on skill level and/or assist physician with examinations, procedures, and treatments as needed, ensuring necessary equipment/ supplies are available; Obtain consent forms when indicated; Serve as chaperone when indicated; Perform EKGs as ordered; Obtain lab results, inform physician when available; Administer medication and/or refer patient to the Injection Room as ordered; Call prescriptions to pharmacies as directed by physician; Make appropriate entries into patient's medical record; Assist with emergency medical situations; Schedule appointments with consultants as indicated; Perform follow-up of all referrals; Schedule and coordinate routine physical and pelvic exams with daily activities when requested; Advise patients regarding questions/concerns based on nursing judgment and/or established physician routines/instructions; Reinforce and clarify physician instructions as needed; Expedite appropriate charges as indicated and advise patients of expenses for which they are responsible; Check medical records to ascertain completed diagnostic reports are present, forward to physician for review/follow-up and closure of record.

INDIRECT PATIENT CARE DUTIES: Restock and maintain supplies in patient care area; Electronically assemble medical record in proper sequence; Prepare exam rooms for next patients; Clean exam room surfaces with disinfectant for infection control; Prepare soiled instruments/equipment for pick up by housekeeping staff for sterile processing; Record all cultures and pathology specimens in log book and provides follow-up and appropriate instructions on all abnormal findings; Retrieve/return culture plates from/to laboratory at beginning/end of work day; Copy patient education materials as needed; Remain in building during lunch and at 4:30 p.m. when “on call” for urgent care and/or acutely ill patients; Answer telephone, confer with and/or refer calls to physician as indicated.

Required Qualifications: 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited School of Nuring program. TN licensed Registered Nurse . Must have 3 years of experience in college health or a M.D.’s office, have strong communication skills, EMR experience, and ability to work in a fast paced environment, desire to be a team player and have a commitment to patient health. Must be willing to work with a diverse patient population and provide full range of services for all eligible students seeking treatment at the Student Health Center. Must have experience in the fitting of orthopedic appliances.
