Job Summary: Under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee, The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the Ph.D. or other doctoral degree.

Additional Department Summary: The Metallurgical Department at The University of Alabama to seeks to fill a Post-doc position in the field of Atom Probe Tomography. The individual holding this position will conduct research on this project.

The University of Alabama seeks applications for a Postdoctoral position. The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, or related science and/or engineering degree. The College and or Metallurgical Engineering Department will establish a series of structured merit-based evaluations. Initial appointments are for one year, with renewal contingent upon demonstration of research productivity.

This position will work under the supervision of Dr. Greg Thompson and conduct detailed studies in the early stages of clustering and ultimate precipitation in advanced aluminum alloys using Atom Probe Tomography (APT). The candidate will be expected to prepare specimens (electropolishing/FIB), be fully capable to operate the atom probe and possibly TEM, with associated detailed analysis of the characterization data.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: PhD. or other terminal degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, or related science and/or engineering degree.

Candidates will need to have completed their PhD. or have it completed by the start of employment. The candidate must have experience working in a laboratory environment gathering and analyzing data.

Skills and Knowledge: The candidate should have a demonstrated track-record in using atom probe tomography, with a hiring preference towards candidates that also have complementary transmission electron microscopy skills and a sound understanding of physical metallurgy.

Preferred Qualifications: Good communication skills both verbal and written.
