Departmental Overview

The mission of the Department of Residential Life is to facilitate residential student transitions into the intellectual and social communities of the University of California, Berkeley, and to promote personal well-being and respect for the community needs of all residents. Our residential and apartment communities are built on five intentional learning goals including Academic Success, Community Engagement, Diversity & Global Conscientiousness, Identity Exploration, and Holistic Wellness.


The Senior Resident Director resides within Residential Life and is charged with providing support to the academic mission of the University by contributing to students' out of classroom learning. The incumbent oversees a residential area of about 750 undergraduate students, supervises 16-26 live-in student staff, and is responsible for the execution of the residential student experience model. The SRD is involved in planning, developing, implementing, and assessing programs, activities, and processes for residential students. The SRD addresses sensitive and emergency situations within the residential community, including students of concern, conduct violations, mental health, and community impact. The SRD serves on the leadership team Administrator on Call rotation. The SRD maintains relationships with departmental, divisional, and campus partners.

  • Supervise 14-22 live-in staff, train, and evaluate student paraprofessional/professional staff members: Senior Resident Assistant(s), Resident Assistants, Theme Program Resident Assistant.
  • Participate in summer, August and January training of hall staff.
  • Conduct student staff meetings on a weekly basis.
  • Facilitate regular staff development sessions designed to provide additional training and team building for staff in the unit.
  • Provide formal performance evaluations, feedback, and oversee performance management of student staff.
  • Assist in a centralized student and professional staff selection process.
  • Meet bi-weekly with each supervisee, such as Senior Resident Assistant, Resident Assistant, Theme Program Resident Assistant, to provide guidance and support.
  • Facilitate seminar for new student hall staff focusing on community engagement and inclusion.

  • Co-chair a departmental committee by providing structure, direction, and feedback to the group and further the priorities of the department. Report to the leadership team on progress.
  • Oversee system-wide or department-wide initiatives. Work closely with the leadership team to develop strategy and implementation. Collaborate with Resident Directors on initiatives to gather feedback, input, and implementation strategy.
  • Represent Residential Life on campus committees and working groups.
  • Build and maintain positive professional relationships across the department.
  • Manage Residential Student Experience Funds.

  • Oversee the personal, social and academic development of residential students. This includes but is not limited to the following: assisting students with academic and social needs, attending unit programs and building meetings, and maintaining visibility.
  • Create, advise, and implement a needs based residential programming model.
  • Meet regularly with the residential unit management team to build community within the unit and discuss unit operations. The management team consists of Resident Life, Cal Dining, Custodial, Facilities and Maintenance management. The management team may also involve working with external partners through Public/Private Partnerships.
  • Encourage a living/learning environment through academic integration activities, and work with Resident Faculty to promote academic support.
  • Work with the residence hall staff to coordinate and facilitate orientation activities.

  • Enforce policies and procedures in the unit and support hall staff in the follow-up process. Facilitate conversations with students, staff, and parents in crisis situations. Ensure the timely and thorough completion of conduct processes and reports. Consult with the Associate Director of Conduct and Community Standards, Coordinator of Community Standards, or other professional staff members on conduct action as appropriate.
  • Participate in the rotation of the “administrator on call” in order to provide immediate consultative support to staff managing crisis interventions and student mental health issues. May be asked to step into Resident Director on Duty.
  • Respond to student behavior that is inappropriate, in violation of campus policies and procedures, and/or negatively impacts other residents.
  • Provide referral counseling to students and consult with the residential psychologist as needed.
  • Act as a mediator in conflict situations when needed (i.e. roommate conflicts, staff conflicts, apartment conflicts, noise disruptions, etc.)
  • Follow-up with students of concern and provide support to hall staff on supporting impact to the community.
  • Document with behavioral contacts as needed in consultation with immediate supervisor. Respond directly to crisis situations.
  • Assist in the direction of paraprofessional staff and ensure reporting of information in a timely and appropriate fashion.
  • Work closely with Residential Life staff, RSSP staff, Dean of Students staff, Student Affairs Safety Officer, UCPD, the Berkeley Fire Department, and the University Fire Marshal to develop, implement and evaluate response to fire, bomb threats, earthquake, and other significant safety issues.
  • Functions as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act and under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Act (CANRA) to report observed/suspected abuse or neglect of children, dependent adults and elders to designated law enforcement or social service agencies.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of student development theory
  • Knowledge of higher education processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and knowledge of higher education and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Supervisory skills such as hiring, training, and providing feedback to student staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving and organizational skills in a student life environment.
  • Skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication, and multitasking.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment principles and the ability to evaluate risks and likely consequences.
  • Ability to demonstrate multicultural competence, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of common higher education specific computer application programs.
  • Understanding of standard higher education rules and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life specialization.
  • Comfortable engaging in high-level decision-making and navigating ambiguity
  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, ethnic studies, social work, or related field.
  • At least 2 years of full-time, professional Residence Life experience.

  • Experience working with large residential communities, and autonomous style-work environments

Salary & Benefits
