Departmental Overview

The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, was established to integrate neuroscience faculty across the University. The broad goal is to use the power of diverse research approaches to address central questions in neuroscience.

The faculty of the Institute includes over 65 researchers with state-of-the-art laboratories from the Departments of Molecular and Cell Biology, Psychology, Physics, and Integrative Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences; the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Biomolecular Engineering and Chemistry in the College of Chemistry, the Department of Environmental Science Policy and Management in the College of Natural Resources; the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute; the School of Public Health; Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Bioengineering in the College of Engineering; the School of Optometry's Program in Vision Sciences; and the Haas School of Business.

The Institute also administers the Graduate Program in Neuroscience. Students admitted to the program may work with any of the Neuroscience PhD Program Faculty and are fully supported for the duration of their graduate work.

Responsibilities

This opening is for a full-time research assistant to work on a new NIH grant titled, "The role of prefrontal sulcal morphology and brain network architecture in cognitive development." The project will be conducted in collaboration between the Cognitive Neuroanatomy (PI: Kevin Weiner) and Building Blocks of Cognition (PI: Silvia Bunge) laboratories at UC Berkeley.

The Lab Assistant will be responsible for defining anatomical structures in the lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC), editing Python code to examine the relationship between morphological features of LPFC anatomical structures and behavior, and editing code to examine the relationship between anatomical features of LPFC and brain network architecture in a pediatric cohort. The research assistant will have the opportunity to participate in manuscript preparation.

Work will be remote until in-laboratory responsibilities for campus onsite work commences. Incumbents will be required to provide and maintain proof of flu vaccination, and may require additional vaccination requirements.
  • Help Principal Investigators and collaborators to analyze neuroimaging and behavioral data and assist with manuscript preparation.
  • Store, protect, and analyze records; manage and prepare to share digital files
  • Perform general lab tasks like ordering supplies, scheduling meetings, managing day-to-day operations; attend lab meetings
  • Train undergraduate student assistants in data analyses and associated tasks

Required Qualifications
  • Strong background in STEM.
  • Extensive laboratory research experience in cognitive neuroscience.
  • Experience running statistical analyses in R or Python.
  • Highly developed organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and communicate updates.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience analyzing and managing neuroimaging and behavioral datasets.
  • In-depth knowledge of neuroanatomy.
  • Coding skills and experience with Github.

Salary & Benefits
