Organizational Unit Overview:

The mission of the Geriatrics Division is to prepare learners at all levels of professional care for the challenges of caring for older patients.

We do this by:

Dedicated medical student teaching and patient care time in the required 3rd year Family Medicine clerkship.

Train Family Medicine residents alongside nurse practitioner and physician assistant students in a collaborative model during their required month-long Geriatric rotation in their first year of residency training.

Train Geriatric Fellows in the special patient care skills and challenges that are part of a career in caring for older patients.

We use many community sites to accomplish this mission:

Monk Geriatric Center

On-site patient care in Memory, Assisted Living, and Skilled Units at a local Continuing Care Retirement Community

Multidisciplinary consultation clinics for memory disorders, falls and medication management alongside faculty in physical therapy, pharmacy and psychology.

Work closely with our Geriatric Psychiatry colleagues and our Alzheimer’s Support Group in the Monk Geriatric Center to provide caring, competent care to patients with these disorders.

Our faculty work closely with Family Medicine residents in the care and supervision of their older patients. We also provide consultation services to patients in the community and hospital inpatient services.

Job Duties :

Fixed-term or tenure track faculty position (at the title or rank of Assistant Professor,
Associate Professor, or Professor) for a Board Certified Family Physician or Internal
Medicine Physician with additional qualifications in Geriatrics preferred for the
primary purposes of teaching Family Medicine residents, Geriatric fellows and
medical students.

Leadership opportunities exist int he Geriatric fellowship, teaching nursing home
project, and residency curriculum development. Responsibilities will include teaching medical students, residents, fellows, and other learners.

There are substantial clinical responsibilities. Practice and teaching sites include an
ambulatory geriatric clinic, the Family Medicine Center, Vidant Hospital and one
continuing care retirement community with skilled care beds.

The teaching hospital affiliated with ECU Brody School of Medicine is Vidant Medical
Center, an academic medical center serving Eastern and Coastal North Carolina.
Opportunities are available for outpatient full-time clinical care service only.

Minimum Education/Experience :

MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution

Board Certified Family Medicine Physician or Internal Medicine Physician (American
Board of Medical Specialties)

Licensed in North Carolina or license eligible
Collaborative (including interdepartmental)

relationship building and maintenance

Refined analytical and critical thinking skills

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and
conferred by the time of hire.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

NC Medical License or license eligible

Board Certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine (American Board of Medical

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Geriatrics or CAQ Eligible
