Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., weekends and nights if needed.

Job Summary: The Communications Specialist works with a department or area to develop and implement communication plans and activities to support the goals of a specific department, a college and/or The University.

Additional Department Summary: The Communications Specialist for the department of University Recreation is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive communication plan, including social media, public relations, graphic design, website management, and/or circulation. This includes developing and implementing strategies to engage students and other stakeholders, based on departmental needs and goals.

This position offers opportunities for creativity and innovation in the development of strategies to promote the programs, services, and facilities of University Recreation. Responsibilities include communication management for University Recreation events and services, in compliance with Strategic Communications and Student Life Divisional Communications. Responsible for the oversight of design and distribution of information to update members and staff about available services and program offerings.

Other responsibilities include coordinating with Student Life Communications to manage the creation of promotional materials for University Recreation. Will be responsible for creating short-term and long-term strategic promotion plans for each area of the department. Develops and coordinates all UREC-specific presentations for Bama Bound Orientation, University Days, and Transfer Days. Designs and presents UREC-specific presentations for campus partners (i.e. HRC, FYE, Parent Programs, etc.). Provides program management and oversight of student staff with specialized skills.

Provides assistance to the Director of Communications for the Division of Student Life in support of divisional communication efforts.

Responsible for completing required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or Advertising and one (1) year experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, or communications; OR Master's degree Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or Advertising. Related student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student oriented experience will be considered. Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.

Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated working knowledge of graphic design programs including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Ability to work with others in a team environment. Excellent project management and time management skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. Excellent ability to write for diverse audiences and communication channels. Demonstrates initiative and creativity in promotional and design efforts. Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through: demonstrating self awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with a diversity of people; fostering equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience supervising and managing interns and/or student workers. Experience managing social media for departments at a college or university. Experience in print and electronic media. Experience in web design, specifically the WordPress website platform. Experience in web space management. Demonstrated communications, project management, and writing, proofing, editing, and social media experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of AP style, social media presence and understanding, and content management of social media accounts.
