Primary Purpose of Position:

The purpose of the Energy Storage Systems Research Engineer is to enhance the EPIC Power Systems team by providing knowledge in control algorithm design, control hardware and software development employing extensive experience in control theory and its application in vehicle and utility scale energy storage. The successful candidate will be a team player with excellent communication skills and proficient working with various modeling and simulation methodologies and the physics and technology of electrical energy storage.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

The Energy Storage Systems Research Engineer will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and developing recommendations about advanced and novel energy storage technology in support of EPIC’s strategic objectives and client-driven research projects. Collect, document, and refine the requirements for energy storage in power systems applications and develop associated control algorithms and solution methods for the same. Design and reduce to operation control solutions (software and hardware) that conform to the specifications. Lead data collection and analysis of results.
The Energy Storage Systems Research Engineer is responsible for the supervision of graduate students during project activities, and active production of research in the context of executed projects and independent initiative.

Minimum Education/Experience:

MS Electrical and/or Computer Engineering (BS with extensive experience will also be considered);
2-5 years of experiences with MS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering;
7-10 years of experience with BS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
The candidate must be proficient with simulation tools such as MATLAB Simulink and/or PSIM while having experience with coding in C/C++ programming tools.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Since this is a critical aspect for the success of research and technology development, a combination of knowledge and experience in energy storage control theory methods is essential. The preferred candidate will hold a PhD. in Electrical Engineering specializing in controls and energy storage theory.
Fluent in power systems control concepts for dc/dc, dc/ac grid interactive and dc/ac grid independent power conversion systems.
Strong coding skills in Simulink and MATLAB.
Proficient coding skills in C/C++.
Energy storage systems architecture and physics.
Experienced in energy storage development processes and documentation.
Practiced hands-on energy storage testing, data collection, and analysis.
Conversant with power system control parameters for feedback control design.
Familiar with applications of power electronic products and sequence of controls for different applications.
Knowledgeable in photovoltaic, battery, renewable energy and conventional generation control schemes with inverter-based systems.
Fluent in conducting control and software design reviews in a diverse group including code reviews and methods of conducting reviews.
Experienced in taking full ownership of the software and control design.
Able to do technical writing and create instructions to document for other areas of the design/test team as well as the users of the developed control.
Task and deadline oriented, self-starter/driven, leadership.
Proven track record writing and publishing scholarly publications.
