Summary of Duties:

The Health Equity Organizer will provide support in the form of planning and coordinating program operations to student led health equity circle chapters in Spokane and supports the regional network of Health Equity Circle student chapters. The Health Equity organizer position is an academic-community collaboration between the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine and the Health Equity Circle. Health Equity Circle is an independent non-profit that supports the development of Health Equity Circle student groups on campuses including WSU Health Sciences.

Key responsibilities will include: developing systems and services that encourage student engagement; developing and delivering curriculum involving the impacts of social determinants of health, relational leadership, and community organizing on health equity to build student capacity for upstream change; establishing a strong network of engaged interprofessional student leaders and community partners. The incumbent will serve as a program representative in the community and be a point of contact for internal WSU program participants.

Duties and Responsibilities:

30% Student Engagement

  • Develop interprofessional student leaders across campuses and support the development of action teams and campaigns to address health inequities on campus and across programs.
  • Develop network of relationships across WSU colleges to engage interprofessional students and maintain interprofessional leadership of the local HEC chapter.
  • Serve as a point of contact and resource for students throughout the WSU system regarding HEC activities.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership development for WSU HEC student leadership. The organizer will also work to make educational opportunities with national community partners available to students.

30% Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships and alliances with community organizations to capacity for campus-community partnerships. Maintain a database, of community partners and key leaders with the software utilized by the Office of Academic and Community Partnerships.
  • Develop clinical services and organize events to increase and sustain patient engagement with the healthcare system.
  • Meet with patient individually and in group settings to identify common issues impacting their health and communities.
  • Develop an internal clinic referral system for patients wanting to become engaged in developing community solutions. Coordinate across existing clinical services to identify patients wanting to become engaged in developing community solutions.
  • Maintain a council/core team of patients and staff who can lead in development of organizing around health equity.
  • Plan, organize, and execute events and opportunities for interprofessional student leaders and community partners to come together to identify community issues and co-create potential solutions to address them.
  • Organizing events includes securing venue, speakers, outreach to community partners, promotion and moderating event.
  • As the program representative, attend meetings and trainings hosted by community partners that strengthen alliances and increase capacity to create change. These may include leadership development, civic education, issue selection and issue research and development.
  • Through networking, develop connections and opportunities for community partners and HEC Student Groups.
  • Independently identify and respond to problems as they arise. Escalate issues to supervisor or other leaders when unable to resolve independently.

25% HEC Regional Network Support

  • Staff HEC board meetings and help develop chapter support materials, regional campaigns and alumni network.
  • Assist in development of new HEC chapters across WSU campuses.

10% Curriculum Development

  • Co-teach “Community Organizing for Health Equity” course for multi-institutional students twice yearly.
  • Develop and deliver curriculum involving the impacts of social detriments of health.
  • Support the development of clinical opportunities for students with clinic organizing efforts in Spokane.

5% Other

  • Perform other related work as assigned


Required Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Experience in the area of health inequities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health equity, as well as racial, gender, and economic justice and HIP’s mission.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health and structural determinants of equity across the lifespan.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare related training or experience.
  • Experience of the impacts of the social determinants of health and equity.
  • Experience developing and delivering leadership trainings, ideally in an organized setting.
  • Experience with facilitating small and large group meetings, ideally with an equity and trauma-informed lens.
  • Experience with mentoring and/or coaching others.
  • Project management experience.
  • Public health experience.
  • Healthcare experience, particularly working in or with a community/rural health center.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
