The University of Virginia's Human Resources Department is seeking a Compensation Specialist. This position supports the compensation director by implementing compensation processes, procedures, and practices, and responding to compensation issues from across the University. The incumbent has demonstrated expertise and experience in administering compensation programs, including short- and long-term incentives, job evaluations, salary increases, and salary surveys.

The Compensation Specialist provides professional guidance, coordination, and support in the effective and consistent application of staff job classification and compensation administration policies and practices. The Specialist administers and maintains various compensation-related data management systems, and coordinates and facilitates implementation of compensation programs and initiatives. The Specialist provides advice, training, and support to HR Business Partners and the University community, as appropriate, in the application of compensation management principles, guidelines, procedures, and best practices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing guidance and instruction to HRSC and UVA HR Team members, as appropriate, in the day-to-day application of compensation programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborating with HRBPs, HRSC and UVA HR team members in the analysis and review of job classification and reclassification requests; quality controls the job classification process for both existing positions and newly created positions, performing job evaluations, position evaluations and audits as appropriate.
  • Researching and analyzing competitive compensation practices in the job market; contributes to established compensation as appropriate.
  • Developing and assisting in writing job descriptions to accurately describe job content, and maintains job description in the Workday job profile.
  • Maintaining and updating compensation databases (Salesforce and Rewards) and the Workday job catalog; consults with Senior Compensation Specialists and People & Data Analytics team regarding concerns with configuration and data integrity, and makes recommendations for system enhancements.
  • Participating, as appropriate, in the planning, coordination, facilitation, administration, and reporting of annual salary review programs (market, merit, living wage and base wage).
  • Acting as a primary point of contact and consultation for HRSC and UVA HR customers, as appropriate, on job classification and reclassification and associated compensation issues.
  • Working with Senior Compensation Specialist, as appropriate, to assist with organizational structure development, job design, and related issues.
  • Assisting in the development, writing, editing, and modification of operating policies, guidelines, and procedures, as appropriate.
  • Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


This position may be permanently remote. A High school diploma and five years of relevant experience, a Bachelor's degree with two years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with one year of relevant experience is required. The demonstrated ability to conduct job evaluation and compensation analysis including participating in and analyzing market data, providing presentations and training regarding compensation programs, and conducting ad hoc reports and analyses. The incumbent must be able to implement changes to compensation programs needed to comply with state and federal policies, laws, and regulations. The ability to build and maintain effective working relationships is a must. Proficiency with MS Office suite, particularly Excel, is required.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
