Job Description
Under general supervision, performs routine tests in medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, ensuring validity and accuracy of test results. Processes specimens for testing and dispatch. Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots equipment. Performs a variety of clerical duties for the laboratory staff. This position reports to the CHS Laboratory Manager.

Essential Duties

    Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examination in all sections of the laboratory; collects blood specimens from patients; evaluates specimens received for testing to determine suitability for testing; notifies physicians or nurse practitioners of rejected specimens.Processes specimens into the laboratory tests and examination in all sections of the laboratory information system for testing; enters and verifies results.Provides clerical support for laboratory staff including processing incoming and outgoing lab reports, making copies, maintaining and organizing filing systems, and end of the month statistical reports.Follows established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, and reporting; maintains records of patient results.Performs scheduled maintenance on all instruments; performs quality control and notifies Supervisor of any problems and corrective actions taken.Participates in quality improvement processes/projects.Complies with HIPAA/FERPA regulations; assists in preparation of safety inspections.Assures the protection of self, patients, and co-workers from undue exposure to infectious diseases, contaminated waste, and hazardous materials.

Minimum Qualifications
    High school degree; OR,Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Preferred Qualifications
    Associate's degree in Lab Science or Medical Lab Technology from an accredited institution.Prior experience in medical lab setting.Certification obtained through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures.Knowledge of tissue culture procedures and techniques.Knowledge of health, safety, and emergency preparedness policies and procedures.Knowledge of patient rights, patient consent, confidentiality, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)Skill in record maintenance.Skill in both verbal and written communication.Skills in prioritizing and completing multiple tasks of varying complexity and urgency in a timely and efficient manner.Strong attention to detail.Customer Service skills.Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.Ability to prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols.Ability to perform a range of clinical lab tests, chemical analyses, and biological samples.Ability to draw intravenous and peripheral blood.The ability to communicate and work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

The budgeted salary amount is $36,018 – 45,023.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.


This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
