Position Highlights:

The News Director will provide the vision and guidance for Arizona Public Media's (AZPM) radio, television, and digital journalism. They will ensure that news coverage and offerings reflect the highest standards of journalistic ethics, production, and public service to Southern Arizona. The News Director will manage the day-to-day news operation. They will drive daily reporting with a combination of energy and calm, creativity, and consistency. A key component of this position is serving as an editor and coach for the reporting team. They will also be an innovative thinker who, in partnership with the CEO and COO, can develop strategies that evolve the brand from not only being the place to go for trusted news but also where consumers can expect to find localized high quality, high impact journalism and content across all platforms delivered with urgency while maintaining the highest levels of journalistic integrity.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assign and edit reporters daily, manage the quality of news content from features and series to spot and breaking news. Establish and manage deadlines for the reporting team. Create, maintain, and execute coverage plans for developing and breaking news.
  • Responsible for planning and leading the work of multiple staff members performing
    diverse responsibilities.
  • Provides guidance and training on work standards and expected outcomes.
  • Develop local news programming and enterprise stories. Work closely with the Executive Producer in development and execution of content for AZPM's television and radio journalism.
  • Work with the COO to develop and execute regular, meaningful, and engaging news events throughout Southern Arizona including town halls, debates, community forums, and listening sessions. Oversee development and maintenance of web, and social media-based news content. Partner with AZPM leadership team in the ideation and development of content that aligns to the strategic goals.
  • Continue to identify more effective and efficient approaches to operations and processes throughout the newsroom.
  • Establish and maintain an innovative and highly collaborative culture atmosphere that promotes idea generation, open communication, respect for others and excellence. Recruit, develop, and retain a strong team, including on-air talent; provide guidance and coaching to maximize their performance and accelerate their professional growth.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism.
  • Minimum of 7 years of related work experience, including 3
    years of managerial experience, or equivalent combination of
    education and work experience.
