The NC State College of Education leads the way in North Carolina in preparing professionals, conducting research, and engaging communities to improve educational outcomes for all learners across the state and beyond.   • The college is composed of three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 124 faculty members and 92 support and professional staff. The college’s 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students study across 60-plus degree programs that deliver highly-engaged and personalized academic experiences that prepare them to lead in the field of education. The college is also home to the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research.
  • The Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS) advances education through scholarship, leadership, and advocacy. Faculty in TELS prepare professionals who are committed to equity and social justice, have deep content knowledge, demonstrate a strong working knowledge of effective pedagogies, and realize the potential of digital technologies to enhance learning.

Essential Job Duties:

  • The Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position in Elementary Education with a focus on equity and inclusion in Special Education. This position consists of an initial, one-year appointment with the possibility of a renewable, three-year appointment depending upon performance reviews as well as fiscal and programmatic needs. The expected teaching load is four courses per semester. We are seeking a strong teacher educator with experience in K-5 public school settings who will contribute to the preparation of Elementary and Special Education teacher candidates.
  • Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses (MAT and MEd) in Elementary and Special Education, advising, field supervision, and ongoing course development.
  • The colleague selected will bring to the department, college, and community an interdisciplinary and transformative line of participation that contributes to the College’s overarching goal of redefining teacher preparation and closing the achievement gaps in public schools of North Carolina and beyond.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain an excellent record in the scholarship of teaching and advising that is aligned with a public land grant Research University;
  • Teach (face-to-face, hybrid, and online synchronous/asynchronous courses) in undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including the Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, and Master of Arts in Teaching in the areas of Elementary Education and Special Education;
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students and serve as a university supervisor for field experiences;
  • Contribute to program development and evaluation in the areas identified above;
  • Engage in partnerships with public schools that focus on closing the achievement and equity gaps in North Carolina;
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the department and within the College in the development and implementation of curricula and courses that further the focus on the cross-training of Elementary/Special Education teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Contribute to the overall departmental mission through excellent teaching and service.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Special Education or Elementary Education from a nationally accredited university.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with children and families in minoritized communities.
  • Experience in teacher education and special education.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, innovation, and collaboration in working with schools and university colleagues.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with students from underrepresented groups and minorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years of successful elementary and special education teaching experience in public schools with students from diverse backgrounds and established teaching focus in one or more of the following:
    • Challenging long-held deficit learning/teaching paradigms in Elementary and Special Education.
    • How community and policy factors, such as Response to Intervention and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, shape the academic development of elementary students with specialized needs and from marginalized populations.
    • Contexts of development (e.g., social and/or cultural) among students with disabilities and marginalized populations.
    • How factors such as race, ethnicity, low wealth, and gender determine and/or interact with corresponding school performance.
    • Developing inclusive, socially negotiated teaching and learning that promote social justice in school learning through co-teaching models;
  • Interest and experience in technology integration, including Universal Design for Learning within Elementary Education and Special Education;
  • Clear commitment to working collaboratively with College of Education faculty in other program areas of study.

Required License(s) or Certification(s):

  • Hold or be eligible to hold advanced teaching licenses in Elementary Education and Special Education; K-12 teaching experience in Elementary Education and Special Education.
  • A strong working knowledge of Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Response to Intervention (RTI), and Universal Design for Learning (UD).
