Position Summary:The Director of Residential Life for Housing Operations manages the Institute’s residential housing system and processes. The Director works independently, is required to use judgement in all residential decisions, and is capable of comprehensive leadership of housing systems and effective on-call crisis response and intervention. Work outside of traditional hours may include consultative assistance to staff, attendance at special events and functions, and staff training and development participation.
Essential Functions:This position is essential for the operation of the new Middlebury residential housing in Monterey, CA.
General Responsibilities:•Manage the housing software system.
•Manage and curate a residential housing website.
•Handle housing contracts including move-in and move-out processes.
•Create and manage the residential building calendar including key move-in and move-out dates.
•Manage early arrivals/openings, returning student check-in, break housing processes, and campus closings.
•Coordinate and manage housing lottery, room assignment, and room change processes.
•Monitor and communicate priorities and concerns to Facilities and Campus Security including custodial, maintenance, touchpad codes, and safety/security concerns.
•In collaboration with Student Services, Campus Security, Facilities, and the Office of the VPAA, develop and/or adapt relevant residential life policies to support a safe, inclusive, and engaging experience for students living in the residential building.
•Respond to all student queries regarding the residential building, housing lottery, room assignment issues, and/or concerns.
•Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Residential Housing Advisors (RAs).
•Work with relevant Middlebury and MIIS departments as needed to develop and implement RA and other staff trainings each semester.
•Respond to and triage on-call student residential housing emergencies.
•Work with the Associate Dean of Student Services on student conduct-related matters and emergencies in the residential building.
•Maintain accurate, timely, and complete records around students of concern and report this information to the VPAA and Associate Dean of Student Services.
•In collaboration with the RAs, coordinate and manage residential life events and programming to enhance and support inclusive residential community engagement.
•Coordinate communication around residence building operations.
•Other duties as assigned.
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or related field experience in higher education or a comparable environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:•Previous professional Residential Life experience required.
•Proficiency in responding to campus-based emergencies and crisis situations.
•Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
•Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to interact tactfully and courteously with students, the public, faculty, and other staff members.
•Ability to apply skills and experience to craft solutions to problems with minimal oversight.
•Willingness and ability to comply with Institute policies and procedures.
•Strong management and training skills.
•Must handle confidential information in a discreet manner.
Three to five years of professional housing and residence life experience with increasing responsibilities.
Physical Demands:The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey maintains a smoke-free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and Drug-Free Workplace Act.
Essential job functions require ability to sit for extended periods of time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. Also requires fine dexterity and ability to grasp, i.e. for writing and word processing/data entry.
Occasional late nights and weekend responsibilities required.
