General Description: The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, advising and related activities-to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen.
Duties and Tasks: The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching in General Biology, Human Anatomy/Physiology, and/or Microbiology; advising students & participating in committees & other activities.
Essential Functions: As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; academic advising; attend to assigned divisional and College duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations; maintain currency in discipline, classroom technology, and best practices as related to Biology education. The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes with the ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.KSA's/Required Qualifications:
Required KSAs: Ability to use technology to enhance instruction; excellent interpersonal, analytical and oral/written communication skills; ability to effectively teach classrooms and labs; experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at NOVA.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in Biology or master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Biology. Degrees and coursework should be from a regionally accredited institution. Teaching experience. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check is required.
College level teaching experience and/or relevant work experience; experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds and experience in community college teaching desired. Background in Botany, Environmental Science, Evolution, Anatomy and Physiology, and General Biology. Experience in Microbiology.
Experience in both traditional and alternative instructional methods, including hybrid and online education delivery. Familiarity with assessment of student learning outcomes. Demonstrated ability to teach a range of Biology lecture and laboratory classes. Experience with faculty advising. Teaching experience, especially at a community college. Experience working with a diverse population.
